Volleyball Capture First Conference Win over Franklin Pierce University

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's volleyball team picked up their first Northeast-10 Conference win, 3-0, on Tuesday night against Franklin Pierce University at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. The Hawks defeated the Ravens by set scores of 25-16, 25-21, 25-18.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks took the early 3-1 lead in the first set thanks to a kill apiece from freshmen Melis Kocak (East Greenwich, R.I.) and Hollyn Frano (Cave Creek, Ariz.). Senior Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz) tallied her first kill of the night to give Saint Anselm an 8-5 edge. A 4-0 run of consecutive kills by the Hawks featuring a kill from both senior Emma Adams (Gary, Texas) and Kocak along with a pair of kills from Frano put Saint Anselm up 15-8. The Hawks would take the first set, 25-16, thanks to late back-to-back kills from Adams.
  • In the second set, sophomore Abigail Macalaguim (Chula Vista, Calif.) opened the scoring with a service ace. After the Ravens connected four points to take a 6-3 advantage, the Hawks answered with their own 4-0 run highlighted by two service aces from senior Alina Barbarena (Los Angeles, Calif) to make it 7-6 Saint Anselm. Both teams continued to exchange points midway through the set to keep the score close. Brown registered two kills in a row late in the set to give the Hawks a 20-19 lead. Shortly after, Brown tallied consecutive aces to help lift Saint Anselm to a 23-20 advantage. Frano's kill followed by a kill from Kocak sealed the second-set victory for the Hawks by a final score of 25-21.
  • Saint Anselm started strong in the third set after taking a quick 4-0 lead. A kill from Julia Felgenhauer cut Saint Anselm's advantage to two points, but the Hawks responded with senior Audrey Wetjen (Henderson, Nev.) posting a kill followed by back-to-back aces from junior Jada Burdier (Haverhill, Mass.). Adams kicked started a 4-0 run for the Hawks with her kill and finished with a service ace from fifth-year Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.) to make it 17-10. Freshman Miia Dembski (Lancaster, N.Y.) posted her first kill of the match off the assist from Macalaguim to put Saint Anselm up 22-16. Frano's kill would cement the 3-0 victory for Saint Anselm, winning the third set by a final score of 25-18.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Frano led the Hawks attack with 12 kills on the night along with five digs, a service ace, and a block. Kocak ended the match with eight kills followed by Adams tallying seven kills.
  • On the passing effort, Macalaguim posted 30 assists while also recording two kills, four aces, and eight digs.
  • This marked the 38th meeting between these programs with the Ravens now holding a 20-18 advantage in the all-time series. The Hawks earned their sixth consecutive win against Franklin Pierce with tonight's 3-0 victory.
