Women’s Tennis Clips Franklin Pierce, 4-3

RINDGE, N.H. – The Saint Anselm women's tennis team returned to action on Saturday, Sept. 23 for an in-state matchup at Franklin Pierce, where the Hawks downed the host Ravens 4-3. The thrilling victory was Saint Anselm's first over Franklin Pierce since the 2018-19 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks garnered early momentum by earning the doubles point, with successes at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Abigail Svor (Lewiston, Maine) and Julia Svor (Lewiston, Maine) put Saint Anselm on the board with a 6-1 win at No. 3, followed by a 6-3 win from the No. 1 duo of Irene Garbo (Assemini, Sardinia, Italy) and Camila Heredia Osante (Oaxaca, Mexico). 
  • Franklin Pierce battled back to take the overall dual match lead with individual singles wins at three of the top four positions. The lone victor for Saint Anselm was Garbo, who posted a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory in a three-set thriller. 
  • Down 3-2 overall, the Hawks would need to secure wins in both of the day's remaining contests. Abigail Svor and Julia Svor met the challenge head-on, as the sisters both scored straight set wins to seal the match for Saint Anselm. 
  • Saturday's team win for the Hawks was the squad's second in a row, both by 4-3 margins. It also improved Saint Anselm to 2-0 in Northeast-10 action. 
  • The 2-0 start to league play is the first for Saint Anselm since 2011, when the Hawks defeated Saint Rose and Le Moyne to open the season.
 INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Garbo improves to 5-0 on the season with her win at No. 1 singles.
  • Garbo and Heredia Osante improved their doubles record to 3-1 together.
  • The Svor sisters improved to 2-0 in with their doubles victory.
