Women’s Tennis Opens League Play With 4-3 Win Over AIC

Manchester, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team came from behind for a 4-3 victory over American International College on Wednesday afternoon, in a home match that marked the onset of Northeast-10 conference play.

UP NEXT:
  • The Hawks travel to Rindge, N.H. on Saturday, Sept. 23 for a showdown with the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University. Action is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior Abigail Svor (Lewiston, Maine) and junior Julia Svor (Lewiston, Maine) opened the afternoon with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles, but AIC scored triumphs at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions to secure the doubles point and an early 1-0 match edge.
  • The Hawks would need to post victories in four of the six singles matches for the comeback, and Saint Anselm managed to do just that, with wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and No. 6.
  • Sophomore Camila Heredia Osante (Oaxaca, Mexico) put the home team on the board, as her opponent defaulted (due to injury) after Heredia Osante had earned the first set, 6-2.
  • Following an AIC success at the No. 4 spot to put the Yellow Jackets up 2-1 overall, Julia Svor finished off her opponent by winning 12 of the 13 games at No. 6 singles for a 6-1, 6-0 win. This tied the overall match at 2-2.
  • Sophomore Julie Börschig's (Stuttgart, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany) hard-fought effort at the No. 2 hole would result in an impressive 6-4, 6-4 win to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead. AIC evened things up, however, with a victory at the No. 5 singles position to tie the match at 3-3, which set the stage for the afternoon's final contest, at No. 1 singles.
  • Sophomore Irene Garbo's (Assemini, Sardinia, Italy) victory at the top spot over Natalia Vlacic in a second-set tiebreaker clinched the team win for Saint Anselm.
