MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's volleyball team split its first two matches of the season on Saturday's opening day of the Saint Anselm/SNHU Tournament. The Hawks defeated Saint Michael's College, 3-1, in the matinee before falling 3-1 to Georgian Court University in the afternoon match. The set scores against Saint Michael's were 18-25, 32-30, 25-19, 25-20. Georgian Court won 19-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-23.

HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. Saint Michael's)
- In the first set, the Hawks went up 3-1 early featuring a service ace by senior captain Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz.). The Purple Knights kept the score close midway through the set but were able to go on a 7-1 run started by a kill from Ella Patterson to put Saint Michael's ahead 15-9. Freshman Melis Kocak (East Greenwich, R.I) disrupted the Purple Knights attack after recording her first collegiate kill as a Hawk. Freshman Hollyn Frano (Cave Creek, Ariz.) tallied two service aces in her debut match for Saint Anselm, but Saint Michael's would take the first set by a score of 25-18.
- The Purple Knights began the second set up 4-0 with Patterson picking up a pair of kills. Senior captain Audrey Wetjen (Henderson, Nev.) earned her first kill of the day to even the score at 5-5. Shortly after, Saint Anselm went on a 7-1 featuring service aces by senior captain Alina Barbarena (Los Angeles Calif.) and Frano. Saint Michael's responded by stringing five consecutive points to go ahead 13-12 in the set. A kill from Kocak started a 5-0 run for Saint Anselm to make it 19-15 Hawks. After the Purple Knights tied it at 21-21, it was neck-and-neck with the Hawks denying Saint Michael's three chances to secure the set. The Hawks would eventually win the second set, 32-30, to even the match at 1-1.
- The Hawks stayed ahead early in the third set thanks to a few attacking errors by the Purple Knights. Senior Emma Adams (Gray, Texas) notched a kill off an assist from junior Jada Burdier (Haverhill, Mass.) to give the Hawks a 12-6 advantage. The Saint Michael's attack started to click midway through the set, but Saint Anselm secured the third set victory by a 25-19 score.
- In the fourth set, the Hawks got ahead quickly thanks to three early kills by Frano to make it 7-3. A pair of kills by Brown and a kill by Wetjen helped gave the Hawks a six-point advantage midway through the set. The Purple Knights stayed in the match by generating a 7-2 run with the Hawks holding a 17-16 lead. Saint Anselm put the match away after winning the last four points of the set and picked up their first win of the season by a 3-1 final score.
- The victory marked the first in the head coaching career of Melissa Ouellet '15.
HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. Georgian Court)
- Early in the first set, Saint Anselm went on a 5-0 run that was started by a kill from Kocak and finished by a kill from Frano to make it 9-3. Both teams exchanged scoring runs due to attacking errors. However, Saint Anselm would take the first set, 25-19, after winning the final three points.
- The Hawks jumped out to a 7-4 lead to start the second set of the match. Midway through the set, the Lions built a 5-0 run started by a kill from Nylene Mateo to put Georgian Court up 12-9. Later, the Lions connected another five points to help them secure the second set by a score of 25-18.
- The score remained close early in the third set until a 5-2 run from the Lions gave them a 13-9 advantage. Wetjen tallied back-to-back kills, each assisted by freshman setter Sam Pila (Melbourne, Australia) to make it 16-13. The Lion's attack found a spark late in the set to help them win the third set and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
- After Martina Croce gave Georgian Court a 5-4 lead in the opening points of the fourth set, Saint Anselm responded with a 7-2 run started by a kill from Frano and finished by a kill from Brown to put the Hawks up 11-7. The Hawks continued to battle as the set neared an end, but Georgian Court would win the match by a final score of 3-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Frano led the Hawks in kills in both matches, ending the day with a total of 25. Brown also finished each match in double-digits for kills while also tallying a total of 18 digs and six service aces.
- Fifth-year Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.) led the team in digs after recording a total of 25 on the day.
- On the passing effort, Pila produced 77 assists for Saint Anselm, tallying 37 assists against Saint Michael's during her collegiate debut.
