Volleyball Defeats Edinboro University, 3-2

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's volleyball team defeated Edinboro University, 3-2, during their final match of the Saint Anselm/SNHU Tournament on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks improved to a 2-1 overall record with the victory over the Fighting Scots.

 HOW IT HAPPENED (18-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-19, 16-14)
  • Senior Emma Adams (Gary, Texas) opened the match with a kill on the assist from freshman Sam Pila (Melbourne, Australia). After the Fighting Scots pulled away with an 8-5 lead, Saint Anselm strung three consecutive points together finished by a kill from freshman Hollyn Frano (Cave Creek, Ariz.) to tie it at 8-8. After keeping the score close midway through the set, Edinboro would go on a late 7-0 run helping them secure the first set win a 25-18 final.   
  • The Fighting Scots continued their attacking momentum earning a 6-3 advantage early in the second set. Saint Anselm disrupted Edinboro thanks to three consecutive kills featuring a pair from senior Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz.) and one by freshman Melis Kocak (East Greenwich, R.I.). Makayla Neelands gave Edinboro a 20-13 lead with her kill, but the Hawks fought back winning five of the next six points to make it 21-18. Saint Anselm capitalized on errors from Edinboro late in the set however the Fighting Scots would take the second set and improve to 2-0 in the match. 
  • The Hawks jumped to a 6-3 lead in the third set after going on a 5-0 run started by a kill from Adams. Frano extended Saint Anselm's advantage to 11-6 after tallying two service aces and a kill. Sophomore Abigail Macalaguim (Chula Vista, Calif.) picked up her first service ace of the match to make 14-9. The Hawks kept Edinboro at bay with Frano recording the final kill to win the third set 25-19. 
  • Back-to-back service aces from Brown and a kill by Macalaguim helped give Saint Anselm a 3-2 lead in the fourth set. After Edinboro connected four kills in a row to take an 8-5 advantage, Saint Anselm responded by going on a 5-0 run to regain the lead at 10-8. The score remained close midway through the set until the Hawks pulled away late with a six-point advantage that helped seal the win by a 25-19 score and force the match into a fifth set. 
  • Edinboro jumped ahead 2-0 but Kocak would tie the set at 2-2 for Saint Anselm with a kill. Erika Lindqvist notched a kill to give the Fighting Scots a three-point lead midway through the final set. After Edinboro extended to a 10-6 advantage, the Hawks battled back by going on a 6-1 run started by a kill from Audrey Wetjen (Henderson, Nev.) to put Saint Anselm back in the lead. With the set tied at 13-13, Frano, Wetjen, and Kocak each notched a kill for the final three points of the set to earn Saint Anselm the 3-2 victory over Edinboro.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Saint Anselm edged Edinboro in kills by a 56-53 margin and held a 15-8 advantage in service aces. 
  • Three Hawks ended the day in double-digits for kills with Brown leading the team with 15 followed closely behind by Frano (14) and Wetjen (11). 
  • Macalaguim recorded a career-high 33 assists in today's victory for Saint Anselm while Pila dished out 19 assists in the match.
