HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior Emma Adams (Gary, Texas) opened the scoring in the first set with her first kill of the match off the assist from sophomore Abigail Macalaguim (Chula Vista, Calif.). A pair of kills from both freshman Hollyn Frano (Cave Creek, Ariz.) and senior Audrey Wetjen (Henderson, Nev.) during a 9-3 run helped further Saint Anselm's advantage to 11-5. After a kill from Assumption's Alexis Distasio, freshman Melis Kocak (East Greenwich, R.I.) and Adams each buried a kill to preserve the Hawks seven-point lead. The Greyhounds shrunk Saint Anselm's advantage to just four points midway through the set until Frano kick-started a 7-3 run with a kill and an ace to secure the first set win by a final score of 25-18.
  • Senior Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz.) tallied a kill followed by a service ace to start the second set of the match. Frano would pick up the next three points for the Hawks with kills to make it 6-4. A 5-2 run by Saint Anselm which featured a pair of kills from both Brown and Adams extended their advantage to 11-6. Assumption cut the lead to one point after connecting four points in a row, but the Hawks would soon respond by going on a 10-0 run highlighted by another three kills from Frano and a service ace from senior Alina Barbarena (Los Angeles, Calif.). Wetjen would seal the second set victory by a final score of 25-14 with her fifth kill of the match.
  • The Greyhounds took a quick 2-1 lead thanks to a kill from Anna Dean in the third set. The Hawks jumped ahead to 6-4 after a 5-2 run featuring two kills from Frano, but Assumption answered by generating their own 5-2 run to take back a 9-8 lead. After the Greyhounds took a two-point advantage midway through the set, consecutive blocks from Adams and Wetjen along with a kill from Frano put the Hawks ahead 14-12. Both teams continued to exchange points with Carly Goodhue notching a kill for Assumption to tie the set at 18-18. Brown responded with two back-to-back kills which started a 5-1 run late in the set making it 23-19. Although Assumption strung three late points together, Saint Anselm would earn the 3-0 win taking the third set by a final score of 25-23.
