MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team posted a 10-3 win in game two of Saturday's doubleheader to earn a split against Saint Michael's College in the team's 2023 Sullivan Park debut.
The Hawks move to 7-22 on the season with a 3-5 record in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division play while the Purple Knights go to 3-19 overall and 3-9 in conference games. Saint Anselm will host Franklin Pierce University in a four-game series, starting on Friday, Apr. 14 and running through Sunday, Apr. 16.
Seniors
Will Panarello (Barrington, R.I.),
Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.),
Brady Doran (Seneca, S.C.),
Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.), and
Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) all recorded three hits between the doubleheader. Doran recorded a team-high three runs batted in while Borrelli and Pierro drove in a pair of runs each.
Senior
Taylor French (Goffstown, N.H.) and sophomore
Jared Reminder (Warwick, R.I.) started each end of the doubleheader on the mound for the Hawks. Reminder received a no decision after allowing three runs in four innings of work. Junior
Matthew Michel (Havehill, Mass.) earned the win in game two after posting five innings out of the bullpen. The junior allowed just three hits and one walk while fanning six in the game two win.
GAME ONE: Saint Michael's 8, Saint Anselm 1
Ulysses Luciano led off the second inning with a double and would come around to score on a single from
Ryan Canty to open the scoring. Consecutive doubles from
Andrew Lanthier and
Terence Moynihan brought home a run each and a single by
Evan Balian gave the Purple Knights a 4-0 lead in through two innings of play.
A solo home run from Luciano pushed the lead to 5-0 in the top of the fifth inning. However, the Hawks got on the scoreboard in the bottom half. Borrelli led off with a double and would score on a single from Pierro, which made the score 5-1 through five innings of play.
Saint Michael's pushed across three runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-1 lead, which would be the eventual final score. A walk and a single got runners on first and second before advancing 90 feet each on a wild pitch. A single by
Max Kolifrath scored one run before Moynihan crossed the plate on a wild pitch. An RBI single from
Sam Cavossa capped the scoring in the inning.
The Hawks managed to get a base runner in both the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings but could not plate those base runners.
GAME TWO: Saint Anselm 10, Saint Michael's 3
A two-out single from Doran set up Borrelli, who sent a triple to right field which plated game two's opening run and gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Saint Michael's tied the score at one in the top of the second inning as
John Luke Cianciolo singled to score Cavossa, who reached on fielder's choice earlier in the frame.
The Purple Knights took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth. Balian led off with a double before scoring on a single. Later in the inning, a second RBI single would give the Purple Knights the two-run lead. Reminder would get out of the trouble in the fourth with a strike out.
Borrelli immediately got a run back in the bottom of the inning as he launched a solo home run to lead off the inning. Sophomore
Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) followed with a double before scoring to tie the score on a double from classmate
Ryan Scialabba (Cheshire, Conn.). The Hawks took the lead on a single from Collins, which pushed the score to 4-3.
The Hawks got some separation on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning. Panarello and Collins registered singles before Doran sent a three-run home run over the center field fence, giving the Hawks a 7-3 lead. Doran's two-out, three-run blast came on the 10th pitch of his at-bat.
Saint Anselm added three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. With the bases loaded, Borrelli would put a ball in play and reach on a fielder's choice. However, Collins would score on a throwing error on the play. Scolaro added a sacrifice fly before Pierro singled home a run to push the score to 10-3.
Michel got a pair of strikeouts and a ground out to close the contest, earning his first win of the 2023 season.
