RINDGE, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped its mid-week non-conference game to nationally-regarded Franklin Pierce University by a 10-2 score on Wednesday.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 7-23 on the season while the Ravens, who are receiving votes in both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II National Polls, improve to 20-9 on the season.
Freshman
Ben Rose (Webster, N.H.) was three-for-four on the day at the plate with one run batted in. Sophomore
Ryan Scialabba (Cheshire, Conn.) added two hits while senior
Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) and junior
Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) collected one hit apiece.
Junior
Hunter Harris (Altamont, N.Y.) suffered the loss on the mound for the Hawks in his third start of the season. Seniors
Avery Mosseau (Bedford, N.H.),
Travis MacMurdo (Tewksbury, Mass.), and
Harry MacKinlay (Norwell, Mass.), sophomore
Zachary Abbott (Gloucester, Mass.), and junior
Will Hunter (Middleton, Mass.) all saw action out of the bullpen for Saint Anselm.
After loading the bases in the bottom of the first,
Jake Miller singled to score a pair of runs and give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
Adam Dadinos collected three runs batted in, in the next at-bat when he hit a three-run home run to extend the advantage to 5-0 through the first inning.
The Hawks got a run back in the top of the fourth inning as Borrelli collected his fifth home run of the season, pushing the score to 5-1.
The Ravens opened their half of the fourth with a leadoff walk which set up a two-run home run from
Ian Battipaglia. The big fly made the score 7-1 in favor of Franklin Pierce.
Battipaglia would lead off the bottom of the sixth with his second home run of the game and add to the Franklin Pierce advantage.
Clough would keep the top of the seventh going with a two-out double. He would score in the next at-bat as Rose sent a single to left center field to score the junior.
Franklin Pierce added a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on a single by
Connor Smalley and a double from Battipaglia.
The Hawks got a pair of runners on base in the top of the ninth but could not cut into the deficit as the Ravens got a strikeout to close the game in their favor by a 10-2 score.
Saint Anselm and Franklin Pierce will open their four-game Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division series on Friday, Apr. 14 from Sullivan Park. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
