SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team played to a Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division doubleheader split at American International College on Saturday.
The Hawks dropped game one by a 9-6 score before rebounding to claim a 13-2 win in game two, moving the team to 10-28 overall and 6-10 in conference play. The Yellow Jackets move to 18-18 on the season and 9-7 in NE10 battles.
Junior
Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) led the Hawks with five hits, two of which were home runs, both coming in game two. Clough was also credited with a team-high eight runs batted in with six of them coming in game two. That is tied for fifth most in a single game.
Senior
Will Panarello (Barrington, R.I.), freshman
Ben Rose (Webster, N.H.), and senior
Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) registered three hits apiece while four other Saint Anselm student-athletes posted two hits on the day.
Sophomore
Jared Reminder (Warwick, R.I.) collected the win in game two after allowing just two runs on eight hits in 8.1 innings pitched. The sophomore fanned four batters in the winning effort from the bump.
The Hawks will wrap up their home regular season schedule with a four-game set against Bentley University, starting on Friday, Apr. 28.
GAME ONE: American International 9, Saint Anselm 6
Collins opened the game with a walk and would reach third on a pair of wild pitches. However, American International would get a pair of strikeouts and a ground out to strand the senior on third.
Saint Anselm opened the scoring in the top of the second as Clough singled to score senior
Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.) and Rose who led off the inning with a walk and a single.
The Hawks added a third run in the top of the third frame on single from Panarello, which scored Borrelli who singled to get the Hawks in business with one out.
American International tied the score on a three-run home run in the bottom of the frame from
Brendan Edvardsen. Later in the inning,
Tyler Ziemak singled to give the hosts a 4-3 lead, scoring
Josh Frometa who singled following the big fly.
Saint Anselm tied the score in the top of the fourth as junior
Richie Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) hit into a double play but Clough would come across to score on the play.
An RBI single from
Ryan Lavelle put the Yellow Jackets back in front and a two-run single from
Jackson Haker pushed the score to 7-4 through four, in favor of American International.
After a pair of singles from Pierro and Rose, Panarello doubled to left field to score Pierro and cut the Hawks deficit to two at 7-5.
With the bases loaded, American International pushed across an eighth run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth. Frometa manufactured a second run in the inning on a sacrifice fly which pushed the score to 9-5.
Sophomore
Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) brought home Rose in the top of the seventh inning which made the score its final of 9-6.
GAME TWO: Saint Anselm 13, American International 2
After a ground out and a strikeout, Panarello opened the scoring in the top of the second on a solo home run which is the seventh of the season for the senior.
American International responded with a run on a double play in the bottom half of the frame.
Saint Anselm scored six runs in the top of the third, pushing the score to 7-1 in favor of the Hawks. Consecutive hits from Williams and senior
Brady Doran (Seneca, S.C.) set up Borrelli who singled through the left side to plate the two runs.
Clough would launch his first home run of the season later in the inning with the bases loaded, scoring four runs on a grand slam which capped the scoring in the third frame.
The Hawks added two more runs on the second home run of the game and season for Clough to push the score to 9-1.
With the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning, Panarello was hit by a pitch which scored a 10th Saint Anselm run in game two.
Senior
Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) brought home one run on a sacrifice fly before Pierro doubled home two more runs which gave the Hawks a 13-1 lead.
American International pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth on a double which made the score its final of 13-2.
