SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team suffered a pair of losses in its Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division doubleheader to American International College on Friday, Apr. 21 by 10-2 and 7-4 scores.
The Hawks drop to 9-27 on the season with a 5-9 record in conference games while the Yellow Jackets pull even at 17-17 overall and move to 8-6 in NE10 play. The teams wrap up their four-game series with a twinbill on Saturday, Apr. 22 with the first pitch in game one slated for 12 p.m.
Senior
Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) and junior
Richie Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) were credited with three hits apiece for the Hawks offense. Senior
Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.) led Saint Anselm with three runs batted in while senior
Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) worked five walks on the day.
Juniors
Matthew Michel (Haverhill, Mass.) and
Dallas Vaughan (Haverhill, Mass.) suffered the losses on the mound for the Hawks.
GAME ONE: American International 10, Saint Anselm 2
The Hawks would load the bases in the top of the first inning but were unable to manufacture a run.
American International would push across the game's opening run in the bottom half of the inning.
Brendan Edvardsen led off with a doubled before a walk put a second runner on base.
Jackson Haker singled to score Edvardsen before
Brandon Gaul singled home a second to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead.
Collins would cut the deficit to one with a leadoff home run in the top of the third inning, pushing the score to 2-1.
The Yellow Jackets responded with one run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of third which made the contest 3-1 through three.
American International added two runs in the bottom of the fifth as
Tyler Ziemak worked a two-out walk. He would come around to score on a double from
Chad Lavelle before Lavelle scored on a double steal which extended the lead to four at 5-1.
Borrelli opened the sixth inning with a solo home run, his seventh of the season. The big fly made the score 5-2 for the hosts.
A double from Gaul would score
Josh Frometa, who worked a one out walk ,to respond to the Borrelli home run.
The Hawks had a great chance to push some runs across with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh but a fly out got the Yellow Jackets out of the jam.
American International added a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on two RBI doubles, pushing the lead to 8-2.
The Yellow Jackets recorded two more runs in the bottom of the eighth on two RBI singles which made the score its eventual final of 10-2.
GAME TWO: American International 7, Saint Anselm 4
Collins opened game two with a leadoff double and the Hawks would load the bases on a pair of walks. However, American International got out of the jam unscathed.
A double from Edvardsen opened the bottom of the frame but Vaughan would pick him off at second to close the first inning.
American International pushed across the first run in game two on a sacrifice fly from Edvardsen to score
Ryan Lavelle who registered a triple in the at-bat before.
Kiernan Caffrey would cap the scoring in the inning with a two-run home run.
Saint Anselm would push across three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Williams and senior
Brady Doran (Seneca, S.C.) reached on an error and a double and after walk issued to Borrelli, Pierro would single to left field to score two runs before senior
Will Panarello (Barrington, R.I.) tied the contest with an RBI single.
However, American International pushed across four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. After getting to two outs in the inning, Frometa kept the inning going with a single before a Caffrey single regained the Yellow Jackets lead. Haker followed with a double to push the score to three and a single through the right side following a Hawks pitching change gave the hosts a 7-3 lead.
The Hawks pushed across one run in the top of the sixth as Pierro singled to score one run following three consecutive free passes.
Saint Anselm would register a pair of singles in the top of the seventh but a strikeout would close the seven-inning game two at 7-4 for the Yellow Jackets.
