Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Andrews nets 100th career goal in No. 10 men's lacrosse's 10-9 defeat at No. 14 Pace

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – In a battle of nationally-ranked programs, the Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team came out on the losing end of a 10-9 Northeast-10 Conference battle at Pace University on Wednesday.

The Hawks, who are ranked No. 10 in the most recent United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division II National Poll, fall to 7-3 on the season and 6-3 in conference play while the Setters, who are No. 14 in the same poll, improve to 10-3 overall and 6-3 in league contests.

Senior Jack Andrews (Cumberland, R.I.) and junior Chase Lilly (Trumbull, Conn.) were credited with three goals apiece in the contest.

Andrews became the seventh Saint Anselm student-athlete to record 100 career goals in Wednesday's game. He now sits at 101 in his time on the Hilltop.

Junior Noah Larsen (Northborough, Mass.), sophomore Will Andrews (Cumberland, R.I.), and freshman Chris Claflin (Newton, Mass.) netted one goal each for the Hawks in the game.

After tying the score at nine on a goal by Ryan Brown at 1:23 of the fourth quarter, Pace would net the eventual game-winning goal with just 11 seconds left in regulation.

The setters would win the ensuing faceoff and run out the final seconds to take the game by a 10-9 score.

Earlier in the game, Pace opened the scoring just 1:10 into the first quarter before Jack Andrews potted back-to-back goals to give Saint Anselm a 2-1 lead. The second goal in the sequence for the senior marked the 100th in his collegiate career.

Lilly closed the first quarter with his first of the day at 2:10 giving the Hawks a 3-1 lead through the opening 15 minutes of play. The junior then extended the Saint Anselm lead to three just 16 seconds into the second frame.

Pace would score a pair of extra-man goals sandwiched around a goal from Claflin as the teams headed to the halftime intermission with Saint Anselm leading 5-3.

Brown and Daniel Zabbia combined for a goal each as Pace tied the tilt at five just 1:55 into the third quarter.

After a Will Andrews goal snapped a three-goal streak for the Setters, the hosts would net another pair of goals to regain the lead at 7-6. Larsen found the back of the cage with 1:37 left in the third to knot the score again, this time at seven.

The Hawks regained the lead on another quick goal, this one from Jack Andrews just 13 seconds in the fourth stanza, pushing Saint Anselm ahead, 8-7.

Marcus Ottavino and Lilly traded scores in the fourth before Brown's late game-tying goal.

Senior David Olsen (Salem, N.H.) turned aside 14 shots on goal in the cage for Saint Anselm compared to 13 for Pace's Louis Ragusa.

Senior Craig Yannone (Lynnfield, Mass.) led the Hawks with four ground balls on Wednesday and six faceoff wins. Yannone moved into second all-time in ground ball pickups.

Senior Ryan Slattery (North Andover, Mass.) caused a game-high three turnovers which moved him into a tie for third in program history with 65 for his career.

The Setters held a 43-42 edge in shot attempts and a 24-22 advantage in shots on goal. The Hawks were 16-for-18 in clear attempts while Pace was 18-for-22. Saint Anselm claimed 35 ground balls to 24 for Pace while both sides were credited with 11 faceoff wins.

The Hawks will wrap up their 2023 regular season on Tuesday, Apr. 25 against Assumption University from Grappone Stadium. Prior to the 7 p.m. start, Saint Anselm will honor its senior class with a pregame Senior Day ceremony.
