Baseball drops final game of NE10 series to Franklin Pierce, 16-9

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped its final game of its Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division four-game series to Franklin Pierce University by a 16-9 score on Sunday.

The Hawks drop to 9-25 on the season and 5-7 in conference games while the Ravens improve to 22-11 overall and 9-3 in NE10 play. Saint Anselm will be back in action on Friday, Apr. 21 with the opening game of a conference series at American International College. The first pitch in Friday's tilt is slated for 3:30 p.m.

Seniors Brady Doran (Seneca, S.C.) and Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) collected three hits each on Sunday. Doran led the Hawks with three runs batted in while Borrelli was credited with two. Sophomore Ryan Scialabba (Cheshire, Conn.) and senior Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) posted two hits apiece in the contest.

Sophomore Jared Reminder (Warwick, R.I.) made his third start of the season on Sunday. Junior Matthew Michel (Haverhill, Mass.), junior Hunter Harris (Altamont, N.Y.), senior John Donovan (Lowell, Mass.), junior Will Hunter (Middleton, Mass.), and senior Avery Mosseau (Bedford, N.H.) all saw action in relief in the contest.

Ian Battipaglia led off the contest with a double on the first pitch of the game and would later reach third on a throwing error. However, he would be thrown out at the plate by sophomore Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) on a ball put in play by Max Gebauer. Reminder would get out of the inning with a foul out and a ground out.

Saint Anselm would strike for four runs on six hits in its half of the first inning. Collins and Doran recorded a pair of singles to put runners on the corners which set up Borrelli who laced a single into right center field for the game's opening run.

Scialabba registered a single which scored Doran to extend the lead two. After a fly out, Scolaro singled to load the bases which set up a two-run double for senior Will Panarello (Barrington, R.I.) to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead through one inning of play.

Franklin Pierce would score a pair of runs in the top of the second as three consecutive hits plated one run before Connor Smalley drove in the second run with an RBI ground out. The Ravens were set up to add a third run on a single by Joel Lara. Lara sent a single to left field but junior Richie Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) sent a strike to the plate throw out the baserunner and preserve the 4-2 Hawks lead.

The Ravens would tie the score at four in the top of the fourth as Joey Acker sent a two-run home run over the left field fence, scoring Brian Hadden who led off the inning with a walk.

Saint Anselm behind the bats of Collins, Doran, and Borrelli would slug three solo home runs in four at-bats, giving the Hawks a 7-4 lead. The Hawks would load the bases on a hit by pitch, a single, and a walk but Stephen Bangs would get a strikeout on the first batter he would face out of the bullpen to get the Ravens out of the jam.

Franklin Pierce loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fifth inning and would score a run on a wild pitch before pushing across one run each on back-to-back singles, which tied the contest at seven.

A hit by pitch and a walk opened the bottom of the fifth with runners on first and second and a sacrifice bunt from Williams would move the runners up 90 feet each. Doran singled up the middle to plate junior Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) and Collins which gave the Hawks a 9-7 advantage.

The Ravens knotted the score once again in the top of the sixth inning as a one out walk and a single put runners on first and second. Both would advance on a passed ball and then score on a double by Acker. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Acker would score on a dropped third strike to give Franklin Pierce its first lead of the game at 10-9.

Franklin Pierce again loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning and would score three runs in the frame. One run would come across to score on a ground out before Hadden brought home two on a single to left field, which pushed the Ravens lead to 13-9.

The Ravens added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning following a leadoff walk from Battipaglia. He would steal second and advance to third on a foul out before scoring on a single from Gebauer, extending the lead to 14-9.

Franklin Pierce added a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to push the score to its eventual final of 16-9.
