MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team posted four runs in the bottom of the sixth of game one, to grab a 5-4 win, before senior
Taylor French (Goffstown, N.H.) fired a one-hitter in game two, leading the Hawks to a doubleheader sweep of in-state foe Franklin Pierce University on Saturday.
The Hawks improve to 9-24 on the season and go to 5-6 in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division play while the Ravens, who are receiving votes in both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II National Polls, drop to 21-11 overall and 8-3 in conference games.
The teams will wrap up their four-game series with a single nine-inning game on Sunday, Apr. 16 from Sullivan Park. The opening pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
Senior
Brady Doran (Seneca, S.C.) posted four hits on the day and eclipsed the 100-career hits mark in game two.
Juniors
Richie Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) and
Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) and senior
Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) posted multiple hits across the twinbill. Clough and senior
Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) were credited with a pair of runs batted in each on the day.
Junior
Dallas Vaughan (Haverhill, Mass.) and French posted complete game efforts for the Hawks on the mound. Vaughan allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits in 7.0 innings pitched. French took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and allowed just one run on one hit in game two, picking up his first win of the season.
The last time Saint Anselm limited an opponent to one hit in a game came on Mar. 10, 2012 when the Hawks held Dominican (N.Y.) University to one hit in a non-conference game.
GAME ONE: Saint Anselm 5, Franklin Pierce 4
A walk and a double in the top of the second gave the Ravens the first scoring chance in game two. However, Vaughan would get a ground out to get out of the jam.
Saint Anselm responded as seniors
Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.) and
Will Panarello (Barrington, R.I.) reached via walk and single with one out in the bottom of the second. The Ravens starter
Chaz Powell managed to get a fly out and a strikeout to strand the runners.
Franklin Pierce pushed across the first run of the contest in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly from
Joel Lara.
Connor Smalley and
Ian Battipaglia reached on consecutive hits which set up the sacrifice fly.
The Ravens added a second run on a throwing error to give the visitors a 2-0 lead headed to the bottom of the third inning.
The Hawks loaded the bases in their half of the third inning with one out but Powell managed to get out of the jam with a strikeout and a fly out.
After Vaughan got the Ravens to go down in order in the top of the fourth, Saint Anselm would get on the scoreboard on an RBI single from Collins which scored Panarello, who reached on an error to lead off the inning for Saint Anselm.
Franklin Pierce regained its two-run lead in the top of the fifth inning on a single from
Jose Savinon. Savinon sent a single through the left side to score Battipaglia, who registered a one-out double. The Ravens would lead 3-1 through five innings of play.
Saint Anselm would strike for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Pierro got the inning started with a solo home run, the fifth of the season for the senior. Panarello and freshman
Ben Rose (Webster, N.H.) reached base safely on a walk and a hit by a pitch which set up Clough, who doubled down the left field line to plate one run and tie the score at three.
After a strikeout and a ground out got the Ravens to two outs in the frame, Doran sent a two-run double to the right field fence, giving the Hawks a 5-3 lead.
Franklin Pierce's
Julien Monks led off the top of the seventh with a solo home run to cut the Hawks lead to one at 5-4. However, Vaughan would get three fly outs to close out the game one win for Saint Anselm.
GAME TWO: Saint Anselm 4, Franklin Pierce 1
Lara would work a one-out walk in the top of the first inning and would eventually reach third following a stolen base and a passed ball. However, French would get a fly out to strand Lara on third.
Saint Anselm would get a pair of hits in its half of the first inning but an infield fly and a strikeout ended the Hawks scoring chance in the opening frame.
The Hawks manufactured the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Pierro worked a leadoff walk and then stole second. After a pair of outs, Clough would single to center field to score Pierro, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
A pair of two-out walks put runners on first and second in the top of the third for Franklin Pierce but French would roll a ground ball to strand the runners.
Saint Anselm doubled its lead in the bottom of the frame. Williams opened the inning with a single and then swiped his team leading 12th base of the season. Borrelli singled to left field which scored the junior and gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
The Hawks plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as Williams and Doran recorded consecutive hits, putting base runners on second and third. Williams would score on a wild pitch before Borrelli grounded out to score Doran which gave the Hawks a 4-0 lead.
Franklin Pierce manufactured a run in the top of the sixth without recording a hit. Lara reached on an error and would advance to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch. Savinon scored Lara on a sacrifice fly which pushed the game to 4-1.
French would take his no-hitter into the seventh inning. After a strikeout and a walk,
Max Gebauer would single through the left side to end the chance at the no hitter. However, French rolled a double play ball to cap the one-hit game two win.
