CARY, N.C. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team used a three-run eighth inning to power its way to a 5-4 win over Dominican University (N.Y.) in non-conference action from the USA Baseball Training Complex on Saturday.
With the win, the Hawks move to 2-11 on the season while the Chargers drop to 1-8. Saint Anselm will conclude its four-game series in Cary, N.C. with a non-conference contest with D'Youville College, slated for a 10 a.m. first pitch on Sunday, Mar. 5.
Senior
Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) collected three hits in the contest with classmates
Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) and
Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.) and freshman
Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) tallying two hits apiece. Collins and junior
Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) were credited with two runs batted in each.
Senior
Avery Mosseau (Bedford, N.H.) recorded a no decision in his fourth start of the season. Mosseau allowed two runs on four hits in 4.1 innings pitched. Senior
John Donovan (Lowell, Mass.) came on in relief to earn the win with classmate
Taylor French (Goffstown, N.H.) locking down the save.
Collins opened the contest with bang, sending his first home run of the season over the left field fence to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Dominican tied the score in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Yorby Vilomar walked to lead off the inning before stealing second and reaching third on a single. He would eventually cross the plate on a wild pitch.
The Chargers claimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth with sacrifice fly from Vilomar, plating
Tyler Richman who recorded a one-out walk.
The Hawks tied the score at two in the top of the sixth as Collins doubled home sophomore
Danny Kent (Whitman, Mass.), who led off the frame by reaching on an error.
Scolaro posted a double to lead off the eighth inning which was followed by a walk from Collins. Both runners would come around to score on a double down the left field line from Clough before a Borrelli single scored Clough to give the Hawks a 5-2 lead.
Dominican would make things interesting in the bottom of the ninth as the first two batters would reach and a single would load the bases.
Alexander Reyes, who singled to lead off the inning, would score on a wild pitch and a groundout by Richman made it a one run game. However, French would get a fly out to close the contest for the Hawks by a 5-4 score.
