Baseball drops NE10 battle to Southern N.H., 14-6

HOOKSETT, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team fell to crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire University by a 14-6 in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division action on Thursday.

With the loss, the Hawks drop to 4-19 on the season and 0-2 in NE10 Northeast Division games while the Penmen, who are receiving votes in both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II National Poll and the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II National Poll, improve to 17-8 overall and 6-0 in conference play.

Senior Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.) led the Hawks offense with three hits while junior Richie Williams (Georgetown, Mass.), senior Brady Doran (Seneca, S.C.), and sophomore Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) were credited with two hits apiece.

Doran earned two runs batted in, in the game while three other student-athletes were credited with one each.

Southern New Hampshire jumped on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning with a three-run home run off the bat of Jorge Burgos. A pair of walks put runners on and a fielder's choice got Saint Anselm to two outs in the inning. However, Burgos sent the first pitch he saw over the right field fence to give the hosts a 3-0 lead.

Saint Anselm pushed across its first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. The Hawks loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk. Senior Will Panarello (Barrington, R.I.) worked a one-out walk to score Scolaro.

The Penmen tacked on six runs in the bottom half of the frame. A walk and two singles loaded the bases before back-to-back walks pushed across one run each. A third run crossed the plate on a balk which set up Nick Schwartz, who registered a three-run home run to give the Penmen a 9-1 lead.

Doran homered in the top of the fifth inning to push the score to 9-2. The home run is the second of the season and the second in as many days for the senior.

Dyrenson Wouters registered a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh, which scored one run and gave Southern New Hampshire a 10-2 lead.

The Penmen added four runs in the bottom of the eighth, pushing the lead to 14-2.

The Hawks matched the Penmen four-run inning in the top of the ninth frame. Doran recorded a one-out single which scored junior Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) who walked to lead off the inning. Williams later scored on a passed ball before Scolaro doubled home senior Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.). Pierro registered his third hit of the game, a single, which scored Scolaro and made the score its final of 14-6.

Sophomore Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.) suffered the loss on the mound for the Hawks. Junior Hunter Harris (Altamont, N.Y.), freshman Logan Bessette (Waterbury, Conn.), and sophomore Roman Ercoli (Concord, Mass.) all saw action out of the bullpen.

The Hawks and Penmen are scheduled to conclude their four-game conference series on Sunday, Apr. 2 with a doubleheader, slated for a 12 p.m. start from Penmen Field.
