PREVIEW: Women's ice hockey, Long Island to tangle in NEWHA Championship

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team is set to meet Long Island University in the New England Women's Hockey Alliance Championship game on Saturday, Mar. 4.

The opening puck drop from the Northwell Health Ice Center in East Meadow, N.Y. is scheduled for 7 p.m. The winner of the championship game will receive the NEWHA automatic qualifier to the NCAA National Collegiate Women's Ice Hockey Championship.

The Hawks advanced to their fifth consecutive NEWHA championship game after skating to a 4-2 win over the third-seed Stonehill College on Mar. 1, improving to 18-16-4 on the 2022-23 campaign.

The Sharks grabbed a 2-1 win in overtime over fourth-seeded Franklin Pierce on Mar. 1, earning the right host the league championship game. LIU holds a 19-13-3 overall record this season.

HAWKS NOTES
  • The NEWHA Player of the Year graduate student Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) set a program record for points in a single season in the win over Stonehill. Golini is the first student-athlete to reach 44 points in a season.
  • Golini ranks second in the league in points while sitting in fourth in goals (18) and holding the top spot in assists (26).
  • All-NEWHA Second Team selection junior Natalie Tulchinsky (Clifton Park, N.Y.) ranks third in the league with 42 points. Tulchinsky has potted 20 goals and recorded 22 assists on the season, both of which rank second in the NEWHA.
  • Sophomore Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.), an All-NEWHA Second Team pick, has scored 19 goals and assisted on 19 others for 38 points this season, all of which are career-highs for the sophomore.
  • Sophomore Audrey Jackson (Shoreview, Minn.) and freshman Brooklyn Pancoast (Helena, Mont.) are fourth and fifth on the roster with 32 points and 25 points each respectively.
  • Tulchinsky, Jackson, junior Claire Weber (Marshfield, Mass.), and senior Gabrielle Huson (Edina, Minn.) netted one goal each in the win over the Skyhawks.
  • Senior goaltender Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) leads all of the National Collegiate level with 1,146 saves this season. Kelley owns a 0.914 save percentage and a 2.96 goals-against average in 36 starts.
  • Saint Anselm has scored 24 power play goals in 137 opportunities, good for a 17.5% conversion rate which is third best in the NEWHA. The penalty kill, which sits at 79.3%, has allowed 30 goals in 145 times shorthanded.
SCOUTING LONG ISLAND
  • Jeannie Wallner has netted a team-high 15 goals while assisting on 14 others for 29 points this season. Wallner collected All-NEWHA First Team honors with Paula Bergström and Tindra Holm. Bergström and Holm were also named the NEWHA Defensive Player of the Year and the Goaltender of the Year, respectively.
  • Carrigan Umpherville ranks second on the roster with 25 points on nine goals and 16 assists. Her 16 assists lead the Sharks.
  • Megan Bouveur has scored 11 goals this season, which are second-most on the team.
  • Mikayla Lantto, the overtime hero in Wednesday's semifinal win over Franklin Pierce, has 10 goals on the season.
  • Holm ranks second in the NEWHA in goals-against average (1.85) while ranking first in save percentage (0.937) and fifth in total saves (725).
  • The team has scored 18 power play goals in 109 chances, good for a 16.5% conversion rate. The penalty kill is operating at 76.8%, having given up 26 goals in 112 times shorthanded.
ALL-TIME, NEWHA POSTSEASON
  • Saint Anselm has qualified for each of the five NEWHA Championship games in league history, the only program in the league to accomplish that feat.
  • The Hawks captured the league crown in the 2018-19 season, marking their lone NEWHA title.
  • The women's ice hockey program is now 10-4-0 all-time in the NEWHA postseason.
  • The Hawks and Sharks have met twice in league postseason play, once in the league championship on Feb. 23 which went LIU's way by a 1-0 score, marking its first NEWHA Championship. More recently, the Hawks skated to a 3-1 win in last season's semifinal round.
  • The winner of this championship game will become the first two-time champion in the NEWHA.
ALL-TIME vs. LONG ISLAND
  • The Hawks and Sharks have met 14 times previously to this NEWHA championship game. The sides are 6-6-2 against each other all time.
  • During the 2022-23 regular season, LIU held a 2-1-1 record against the Hawks. After Saint Anselm opened the series with a 3-2 win on Oct. 21, LIU netted a 2-0 win the following afternoon, both from Sullivan Arena.
  • The teams skated to a 4-4 tie on Jan. 6 but the Sharks would grab their second win in the regular season series by a 2-1 score in overtime on Jan. 7.
