MANCHESTER, N.H. – The nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team captured a 13-5 win over crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday from Grappone Stadium.
With the win, the Hawks, who are ranked No. 11 in the most recent United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division II National Poll, improve to 3-2 on the season and to 2-2 in Northeast-10 Conference play while the Penmen drop to 1-3 overall and 0-3 against league opponents.
Sophomore
Joe Lombardi (Holliston, Mass.) netted a career-high four goals for the Hawks in the contest with senior
Jack Robinson (Wilbraham, Mass.) matching his four points with three goals and one assist.
Saint Anselm extended its winning streak to nine games over Southern New Hampshire in the win, which is the longest for either side in the all-time series.
Freshman
Chris Claflin (Newton, Mass.) got the scoring started just 47 seconds into the first quarter, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Lombardi and Robinson each found the back of the cage as Saint Anselm led 3-0 just 4:24 into the contest.
Ryan Auger netted the first Penmen goal of the contest late in the first quarter. However, the Hawks would score the next four goals and five of six in the second quarter to take an 8-2 lead at the half. Junior
Noah Larsen (Northborough, Mass.), Lombardi, freshman
Maverick Lyon (Albany, Ore.), and Robinson were credited with the Saint Anselm tallies in the second frame.
The Penmen would outscore the Hawks, 2-1 in the third quarter as Auger netted back-to-back goals after an early strike from Robinson, pushing the score to 9-4 through 45 minutes of play.
Senior
Jack Andrews (Cumberland, R.I.), Lombardi, and senior
Will Kezerian (Melrose, Mass.) combined for a four-goal run to open the fourth quarter which gave the Hawks a 13-4 lead. A goal with 1:11 remaining in the Queen City Cup battle from the Penmen made the score its final of 13-5.
Senior
David Olsen (Salem, N.H.) made eight saves on 13 shots on goal for the Hawks as he collected his third win of the season.
Six Saint Anselm student-athletes recorded four ground balls on the day as the Hawks scooped up 46 as a team in the contest.
Robinson, junior
Mack Hicklen (Wilbraham, Mass.), junior
Jonathan Holland (Derry, N.H.), and senior
Henry Alford (Southborough, Mass.) all caused two turnovers apiece for the Hawks, who forced Southern New Hampshire into 25 turnovers on the day.
The Hawks held a 33-13 advantage in shots on goal on Tuesday. Saint Anselm was 26-for-29 in clears compared to 21-for-28 for Southern New Hampshire. The Penmen won 12 of the game's 20 faceoffs.
Saint Anselm will be back in action on Saturday, Apr. 1 when they travel to No. 19 Bentley University for a 6 p.m. NE10 battle with the Falcons.
