NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team slugged four home runs in a non-conference doubleheader split against Assumption University on Sunday.
The Hawks move to 3-13 on the season while the Greyhounds move to 4-10 in the early going of their season. Saint Anselm will host The College of Saint Rose in a pair of non-conference doubleheaders from Hopkinton High School in Hopkinton, Mass. on Saturday, Mar. 18 and Sunday, Mar. 19.
Sophomore
Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) led the Hawks with three hits on the day, two of which were solo home runs. Those were the firsts of his collegiate career.
Freshman
Ben Rose (Webster, N.H.) and senior
Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) followed closely with two hits each. Borrelli and senior
Will Panarello (Barrington, R.I.) slugged one home run apiece in the twinbill.
Junior
Dallas Vaughan (Haverhill, Mass.) collected his first win in a Hawks uniform after allowing three runs on seven hits over eight innings pitched in game two. The junior fanned nine batters in the win.
GAME ONE: Assumption 6, Saint Anselm 1
The Greyhounds opened the scoring in game one with a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning.
Jack Barry and
Cole Durkan reached via hit by pitch and a walk which set up the three-run homer for
Jared Berardino.
Assumption added a run on a solo home run from Barry in the bottom of the fourth.
The Hawks would get on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning. Senior
Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.) doubled with one out and then stole third which brought Panarello to the plate. The senior would record his ninth run batted in this season with a sacrifice fly, bringing the score to 4-1.
Assumption tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. After three walks loaded the bases, a wild pitch followed by a sacrifice fly, plated a pair of runs which pushed the score to 6-1.
The Hawks managed to get a pair of runners on base in the top of the ninth but were unable to cross the plate as the game ended on a ground out.
GAME TWO: Saint Anselm 6, Assumption 3
After both sides went three up, three down in the first inning, Scolaro drove his first collegiate home run over the left field fence to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
A two-out walk by Pierro extended the top of the fourth for Panarello who hit the second Hawks big fly of the day, this one to left center field, giving Saint Anselm a 3-0 lead.
Assumption cut the Hawks lead to one as
Emilio Acosta drove a two-run home run to left field, pushing the score to 3-2.
Rose would keep the top of the fifth going with a two-out double and later came around to score following a Greyhounds error.
Scolaro added his second home run of the day to lead off the seventh inning, extending the Saint Anselm lead to 5-2 before Borrelli slugged his first homer of the season in the top of the eighth.
Assumption would pull the deficit to three with a ground out from Berardino, pushing the score to 6-3 in the bottom of the eighth.
Senior
Taylor French (Goffstown, N.H.) earned his second save of the season in the bottom of the ninth. The senior allowed one base runner via a walk but sealed the contest with a strikeout.
