Baseball downed by Saint Rose in non-conference doubleheader

HOPKINTON, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped both games of its non-conference doubleheader to The College of Saint Rose by 8-1 and 9-4 scores from the Hopkinton High School on Saturday.

The Hawks drop to 3-15 on the season with the pair of defeats while the Golden Knights improve to 6-8 in 2023. The teams are scheduled to conclude their four-game series on Mar. 19 from the Hopkinton High School. The first pitch in game one is slated for a 12 p.m. start.

Junior Richie Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) recorded a team-high four hits on the day. Sophomore Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) and senior Brady Doran (Seneca, S.C.) collected a pair of hits each with Scolaro driving in two runs, which led the squad.

Juniors Dallas Vaughan (Haverhill, Mass.) and Hunter Harris (Altamont, N.Y.) made starts on the mound for the Hawks. Senior John Donovan (Lowell, Mass.) came on in relief in game two and fanned a career-high nine batters over 3.2 innings pitched.

GAME ONE: Saint Rose 8, Saint Anselm 1

A two-out single for Jack McDonald continued the top of the first for the Golden Knights. Tony Socci sent a ball to deep center field that would plate McDonald. However, Socci would be stranded at third following the RBI triple as Vaughan limited the damage with a line out.

The Golden Knights plated six runs in the top of second inning as Jared Reed and McDonald recorded a three-run home run each in the frame which gave the visitors a 7-0 lead early in the contest.

The Hawks crossed the plate in the bottom of the third inning. Williams reached on a bunt single to open the Hawks half of the frame and reached second via a stolen base. Junior Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) plated Williams on a single of his own, pushing the score 7-1.

Saint Anselm would get a runner to third in the bottom of the fourth inning but was unable to capitalize on the scoring chance.

Saint Rose tacked on one more run in the top of the fifth inning on a Saint Anselm throwing error, making the score 8-1.

The Hawks managed to get two runners on base with no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning but Saint Rose worked out of the jam with a pair of fly outs and a ground out.

Junior Will Hunter (Middleton, Mass.) got out of a bases loaded scenario in the top of the eighth inning to keep the score at 8-1.

GAME TWO: Saint Rose 9, Saint Anselm 4

A lead-off double by Ryan McGee would quickly translate to the first run of the game as Vince Venditti singled, scoring McGee and giving the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead.

A pair of walks and consecutive hits pushed the lead to three before a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch capped a four-run second inning for Saint Rose, who led 5-0 through two innings of play.

In the top of the fourth inning, Venditti reached on a fielder's choice which scored one run and a wild pitch with the bases loaded added another run as Saint Rose led 7-0 through the top of the fourth.

Saint Anselm pushed across four runs in the bottom half of the inning as Doran and senior Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) recorded a walk and a single to lead off the inning. Senior Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.) singled to score Doran before both runners came around to score on a double by Scolaro. Williams immediately followed with a double of his own to score the sophomore and cut the Hawks deficit to three at 7-4.

However, Saint Rose got two runs back on a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning, making the score its eventual final of 9-4.

Saint Anselm got a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the seventh but they were stranded as the seven inning game came to a close on a ground out.
