PREVIEW: Men's basketball to host American International on Tuesday

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team will host American International College on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Saint Anselm (15-6, 11-4 NE10) will look to rebound from a 77-56 home loss to Pace University on Wednesday. Prior to that defeat, the Hawks had won 13 out of a possible 15 games – Saint Anselm has just five games left in the regular season.

American International (5-18, 3-12 NE10) has lost two in a row, including eight of a possible nine games played away from its home court in 2022-23. Removing its two victories against Saint Michael's, American International has not won a regulation game in the NE10 since Jan. 5, 2022.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Saint Anselm was tripped up by a strong Pace University side on Wednesday, 77-56, at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. Two of the six losses absorbed by the Hawks this season have come at the hands of the Setters.
  • Against Pace, Saint Anselm shot 34.5% from the floor, the second-lowest total on the season that trails only the 28.3% field goal percentage recorded in the team's earlier game at Pace on Nov. 22. The Setters also controlled the paint, scoring 30 of its points under the rim while keeping the hosts to just 10 paint points.
  • Senior Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.), who was honored with a pre-game ceremony to recognize his 1,000th career point, scored 14 points in 40 minutes for the Hawks. Classmate Owen McGlashan (Marlton, N.J.) had 10 points while sophomore Zac Taylor (Victoria, Australia) scored nine points with seven rebounds, leading the team.
  • The Hawks rank seventh nationally in fouls per game (13.3) and 13th in team three-point field goal percentage (40.4%). Saint Anselm actually ranks third in the NE10 in the former category, trailing national leader New Haven (10.8).
  • Arbuckle checks in with the second-best points per game (17.6) in the NE10 while playing the league's third-most minutes per game (36:59). Senior Miles Tention (Palo Alto, Calif.) holds the nation's second-best minutes per game figure (38:18), trailing only Pace's Lyron Bennett.
  • Keith Dickson, in his 36th season leading the Saint Anselm program, owns a career record of 696-359 (.660).

SCOUTING AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL

  • The Yellow Jackets rank third in the NE10 with just 12.1 turnovers per game this season. The team also enjoys a +0.8 turnover margin, ranking fourth, and the squad puts home 7.8 three-point baskets per game.
  • AIC ranks last in the NE10 in scoring offense (64.9), rebounds per game (30.35) and free throw percentage (64.2%). The team has also compiled a scoring margin of -7.6 through its 23 games this season.
  • Jack Hall has produced a league-leading 179 three-point basket attempts, ranking seventh nationally, and his 2.83 triples made per game is the second-highest total in the NE10. Hall is also among the league leaders in minutes per game (35:22), ranking fourth.
  • Justice Ellison is shooting at a 43.6% clip on the season, ranking 11th in the conference, and his 6.2 rebounds per game also ranks within the top-15 in the conference.

ALL-TIME vs. AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL

  • The Hawks own a 79-46 (.632) all-time record against the Yellow Jackets, the most wins against any one opponent in Saint Anselm history.
  • Saint Anselm has won 19 of the last 23 games played against American International, with two of those four losses coming in overtime.
  • The very first meeting between AIC and Saint Anselm was played on Feb. 2, 1935, a 40-25 victory for the Hawks.
  • Saint Anselm eked out a 58-56 win over the Yellow Jackets on Thursday, Dec. 8 thanks to a steal and score by junior Matt Becker (Fairfield, Conn.) with just over 10 seconds left in regulation time. A botched inbounds play by American International with the score tied at 56 was picked off by Becker and carried up the floor for the game-winning basket with 10 seconds left.
