Murphy's OT goal gives men's ice hockey a 4-3 win on Senior Day over Saint Michael's

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior co-alternate captain Jack Murphy (Marshfield, Mass.) found the back of the net just 22 seconds into the overtime period, giving the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team a 4-3 overtime win over Saint Michael's College on Saturday.

With the win, the Hawks grab their 16th win of the season, the most since the 2018-19 season and improve to 16-9-2 overall with an 11-5-2 record in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Purple Knights drop to 9-11-2 on the season and 8-7-1 in conference contests. Saint Anselm is back in action on Friday, Feb. 10 when they travel to Anna Maria College for a non-conference contest, scheduled for a 5:40 p.m. opening puck drop.

Prior to the start of the contest, the Hawks honored their six seniors of the Saint Anselm class of 2023 which includes Murphy, Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.), Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.), Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.), Mark Leach (Londonderry, N.H.), and Chris Lemay (Salem, N.H.).

Murphy collected a loose puck in the attacking zone in overtime and drove toward the goal. He made a move to his left around a defender and held his shot attempt, eventually beating Marshall Murphy in the upper half of the goal, giving the Hawks a 4-3 win.

Earlier in the contest, Quinn McCarthy opened the scoring just 1:35 into the tilt. McCarthy collected a long stretch pass and fired a shot into the upper left corner of the goal. Freshman Garrett Alberti (Wilmington, Mass.) netted an equalizer just 12 seconds after on a breakaway, beating Marshall through the five hole to push the score to 1-1.

At 11:48 of the second period, David Ciancio fired a snap shot from the top of the slot on the power play to give Saint Michael's a 2-1 lead.

After the Purple Knights were whistled for a five-minute major, the Hawks would strike twice with the extra skater. Murphy fired a shot from the point in the closing minutes of the second period before Lemay gave Saint Anselm a 3-2 lead at 1:26 of the third period.

With the goaltender pulled and on a power play, the Purple Knights would tie the score on a cross-crease one timer by Matt Schreiner at 18:06 of the third period.

The Purple Knights held a 36-24 advantage in shots on goal in the tilt. The Hawks won 38 of the game's 65 faceoffs and were led by Lemay and Hayes who won 14 and 13 draws each.

Howard collected his 34th career win on Saturday after stopping 31 shots on goal in the contest. Murphy stopped 22 shots on goal for the Purple Knights.
