AUBURN, Mass. – Behind a career-high 48 saves from senior goaltender
Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.), the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie at Anna Maria College on Friday.
The Hawks move to 16-9-3 on the season following the non-conference tie while the AMCATS move to 10-13-3 on their season. Saint Anselm will battle Rivier University in another non-conference tilt on Saturday, Feb. 11 with a 7:20 p.m. opening puck drop from Nashua, N.H.
Junior
Liam Lyons (Gloucester, Mass.), sophomore
Chase Reynolds (Middletown, Conn.), and freshman
John Myers (White Plains, N.Y.) netted one goal each for the Hawks in the contest. Reynolds added an assist for two points in the tilt while sophomore
Mark Blaney (Braintree, Mass.) and senior
Mark Leach (Londonderry, N.H.) were also credited with one assist each .
Howard made double-digit saves in all three regulation periods and added three stops in overtime to post his 48 saves. Howard eclipsed 1,800 career saves in the game, becoming just the sixth Saint Anselm men's ice hockey student-athlete to reach that mark.
After a scoreless first period,
Brandon Della Paoler got the scoring started at 4:12 of the second period, which gave Anna Maria a 1-0 lead.
At 14:04 of the second, Lyons would net his sixth goal of the season with Reynolds collecting an assist on the equalizer. That would send the teams to the second intermission tied at one.
Della Paoler would give the AMCATS a 2-1 lead with a power play goal at 4:02 of the third period but Reynolds answered with a goal for the Hawks just 2:09 later.
Anna Maria netted a second power play goal to regain the lead at 3-2 at 7:12 of third frame but once again the Hawks would rally as Myers found the twine at 13:13, tying the score at three.
In the overtime, Lyons would fire a shot that rang off the post which proved to be the closest either side came to grabbing the victory.
Anna Maria held a 51-31 edge in shots on goal in the tilt. Saint Anselm was scoreless in its four power play chances while the AMCATs netted two goals in four opportunities with the extra skater.
Senior
Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.) was 15-of-30 in draws in the contest, aiding the Hawks to 39 faceoff wins compared to 30 for Anna Maria.
