Mix's overtime goal gives men's ice hockey 3-2 win over Rivier

NASHUA, N.H. – Sophomore Luke Mix (Winchester, Mass.) found the back of the net just 1:40 into the overtime period to give the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team a 3-2 win over Rivier University on Saturday.

The Hawks, who were skating in their third consecutive overtime game, improve to 17-9-3 on the season with the win. The Raiders will see their season come to a close at 7-15-2. Saint Anselm will host NCAA Division I Stonehill College on Tuesday, Feb. 14 in the team's final home game of the 2022-23 regular season.

Saint Anselm has reached the 17-win mark for the first time since the 2017-18 campaign, which ended in the most recent Northeast-10 Conference Championship for the program.

Mix led the Hawks with two goals in the contest while junior Alec Grace (Laguna Hills, Calif.) netted the other goal for Saint Anselm. Seniors Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.), Chris Lemay (Salem, N.H.), and Jack Murphy (Marshfield, Mass.) and freshman Luke Linart (Holland, Mich.) were credited with one assist each.

Mix collected the puck in the Saint Anselm defensive end and drove through the neutral zone and into the Raiders zone in the overtime period. Mix sent a wrist shot from the left faceoff dot into the left side of the goal to give the Hawks a 3-2 win in overtime.

Earlier in the contest, the Raiders would get on the scoreboard in the first period. Nicolas Paolucci won a puck battle in the slot and made a strong move to his right, beating sophomore goaltender Trevor Lally (Burlington, Mass.) in the low right of the goal.

Cormac Hayes redirected a cross-crease pass on the power play to double the Rivier lead in the opening minute of the second frame.

Mix cut the Hawks deficit to one as he fired a point shot through traffic on the power play at 4:22 of the third period.

Saint Anselm tied the contest at two with a second power play goal of the game at 9:19 of the final regulation period. Murphy and Hayes worked the puck around the top of the zone and found Grace who sent a snap shot into the upper half of the goal for his fifth goal of the season.

The Hawks held a 26-20 advantage in shots on goal in the game and won 32 of the game's 55 faceoffs, led by Hayes who won 13 draws. Saint Anselm netted a pair of power play goals in three chances while Rivier was one-for-four with the extra skater.

Lally posted 18 saves in his fifth career start, improving to 3-2-0. His counterpart, Luke Newell made 23 saves in the losing effort for the Raiders.
