Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men's ice hockey falls to NCAA Division I Stonehill in overtime, 3-2

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team dropped its regular season home finale to NCAA Division I Stonehill College by a 3-2 score in overtime on Tuesday.

The Hawks, who were skating in their fourth consecutive overtime game, drop to 17-10-3 on the season while the Skyhawks move to 16-6-2. Saint Anselm will conclude the regular season on the road as the squad has a pair of Northeast-10 Conference games at Franklin Pierce on Friday, Feb. 17 and Saturday, Feb. 18.

Sophomore Hunter Brackett (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and junior Alec Grace (Laguna Hills, Calif.) netted one goal each for the Hawks in the contest against their former NE10 rival. Senior Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.), junior Liam Lyons (Gloucester, Mass.), and freshmen John Myers (White Plains, N.Y.) and Garrett Alberti (Wilmington, Mass.) registered one assist apiece.

Senior goaltender Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) moved into fifth all-time in career saves at 1,873 after making 27 saves in the tilt with the Skyhawks.

With time winding down in the overtime period, Kyle Heath would collect a loose puck in the Stonehill defensive zone. He would send a long pass to the Hawks blue line for Max Pineo who would convert on the breakaway chance at 4:46 of the extra frame, registering the game-winning tally.

Earlier in the contest, it was the Skyhawks who would strike first at 18:20 of the opening stanza as Brendan Nehmer collected a stretch pass from Heath at the Saint Anselm blue line. Nehmer made a strong move to the slot and buried his shot attempt to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

After the Hawks controlled most of the action in the second period, Stonehill managed to break through and double its lead on the power play at 16:47. Jake Cady fired a shot from just inside the right faceoff circle which Howard got a piece of but not enough of, as the puck trickled over the goal line.

Less than one minute later, Brackett got Saint Anselm on the scoreboard with his eighth goal of the season. Alberti forced a turnover behind the Skyhawks goal and found Myers at the left faceoff dot. Myers slid a pass to Brackett who one-timed home his shot attempt from the slot to push the score to 2-1.

Freshman Tim Duffy (Sudbury, Mass.) nearly netted his first collegiate goal early in the third period but the puck bounced off the post and stayed out of the goal.

The Hawks would find an equalizer at 8:43 of the final regulation period on a five-on-three power play. Lyons fired a shot that rang off the pipe but Hayes found Grace on the left post for the goal, knotting the score at two.

Saint Anselm held a 32-20 advantage in shots on goal. Stonehill posted 28 faceoff wins in 54 draws. Both programs were one-for-four on the power play.
