WINCHENDON, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team had five different goal scorers on their way to a 5-3 win over in-state foe Franklin Pierce University on Friday.
With the win, the Hawks have secured a first round bye in the Northeast-10 Conference postseason and improve to 18-10-3 on the season with a 12-5-2 record in conference contests. Saint Anselm's 18 wins in 2022-23 are the most since the 2004-05 team posted 18 wins in that campaign.
Senior co-captain
Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) and sophomore
Mark Blaney (Braintree, Mass.) netted one goal and assisted on one other for two points apiece in the win. The Hawks had 10 student-athletes register at least one point in the contest.
Senior goaltender
Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) needs just 18 saves to set a program record for saves in a single season which has stood since the 1986-87 season. Howard stopped 14 shots on goal in his 35th career win.
Blaney got the scoring started late in the first period as he forced a turnover in the neutral zone. The sophomore showed off some strong puck handling as he evaded three defenders and managed to beat
Kyle Martin for a shorthanded goal to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Junior
Liam Lyons (Gloucester, Mass.) doubled the Saint Anselm advantage at 1:49 of the second period. Lyons collected an entry pass from sophomore
Chase Reynolds (Middletown, Conn.) and fired snap shot into the upper left of the goal.
Franklin Pierce got one back at 6:37 of the second period.
Devin Rohrich would one-time home a shot from the slot to cut the Saint Anselm lead to 2-1.
Freshman
Luke Linart (Holland, Mich.) reestablished the Hawks two-goal lead at 14:21 of the second frame. Senior
Mark Leach (Londonderry, N.H.) fired a shot wide of the goal which allowed Linart to corral the rebound off the end board and bury the scoring chance.
The Ravens netted a power play goal to open the third period before freshman
Garrett Alberti (Wilmington, Mass.) responded with his third goal of the season at 7:53.
Jackson Dobek pushed the score to 4-3 at 14:28 of the third but Andary, with 1:01 left on the clock, buried an empty-net goal to give the Hawks the 5-3 win.
Saint Anselm held a 45-17 advantage in shots on goal and won 37 of the game's 61 faceoffs. The Hawks were scoreless in their one power play chance while the Ravens found the back of the goal in one of their four chances.
