PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped both games of its twinbill to nationally-ranked University of North Carolina Pembroke by 13-6 and 12-2 scores on Saturday.
The Hawks closed their opening three-game series with a 0-3 record and will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 10 in the first game of a four-game set with Post University from Shipyard Park in Charleston, S.C. The Braves, who are receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll and are 13th in the BaseballNews.com Division II national poll, improve to 3-0 on their season.
Senior
Brady Doran (Greenville, S.C.) led the Hawks offense with three hits while junior
Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.), senior
Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.), and senior
Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) recorded two hits apiece.
Sophomore
Jared Reminder (Warwick, R.I.), junior
Hunter Harris (Altamont, N.Y.), and senior
Taylor French (Goffstown, N.H.) posted the top pitching lines for the Hawks from the mound. Reminder allowed just two hits and one run in three innings of work while Harris and French combined to allow just one baserunner in two innings of action.
GAME ONE: UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA PEMBROKE 13, SAINT ANSELM 6
The Braves struck for three in the bottom of the first and two in both their halves of the third and fourth innings to take a 7-0 lead through four.
Saint Anselm crossed the plate twice in the fifth as Clough managed to reach base on a dropped third strike, allowing senior
Will Panarello (Barrington, R.I.) to reach second and then advance to third on a throwing error, following his lead-off walk. Panarello would come across to score on a wild pitch before Collins singled home Clough, cutting the Hawks deficit to 7-2.
The Hawks added on two more runs in the top of the seventh as a pair of walks by Clough and Collins brought Doran to the plate, who laced a RBI double into left center field. Senior
Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) was credited with an RBI groundout which plated Collins, making the score 9-4.
After UNC Pembroke scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth, Saint Anselm netted another pair of runs in the top of the ninth. Again, Clough and Collins got the inning started with a pair of hits which brought Doran to the plate. He would reach base on an error, scoring Clough, before a Borrelli groundout scored Collins which pushed the score to its final of 13-6.
GAME TWO: UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA PEMBROKE 12, SAINT ANSELM 2
The Hawks would strike first in game two, plating two runs in the top of the second. Borrelli led off the frame with a walk and was followed by a single from Pierro and another walk, this one issued to Panarello, which loaded the bases. Junior
Richie Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) reached on an error which brought home Borrelli for the game's opening run. Freshman
Ben Rose (Webster, N.H.) would single in his first collegiate at-bat, scoring Pierro to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
The Braves responded with five in their half of the second as they scored on a bases loaded walk which set up a two-run single, a RBI triple, and a RBI single.
UNC Pembroke tacked on three more runs in both the third and fourth innings before posting one in the fifth, making the score its final of 12-2.
