Baseball splits twinbill at Post

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team split its non-conference twinbill with Post University on Friday, taking game one by a 16-10 score before falling in game two, 7-4.

The Hawks move to 1-4 on the season while the Eagles go to 1-1. The teams will close their four-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 12 from Waterbury, Conn. The contests are scheduled for 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. starts.

Senior Will Panarello (Barrington, R.I.) and junior Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) led the Hawks with three hits each in the pair of games. Clough drove in five runs on the day with senior Brady Doran (Seneca, S.C.) following closely with four. Senior Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) and Panarello came around to score four times each in the doubleheader.

Sophomore Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.) collected the win in game one for the Hawks after throwing for six innings in his second start of the season. Senior Taylor French (Goffstown, N.H.) posted a scoreless inning of work for Saint Anselm in game one. Junior Dallas Vaughan (Haverhill, Mass.) fanned five batters in four innings of work in the game two start.

GAME ONE: SAINT ANSELM 16, POST 10

Clough opened the game with a leadoff walk and would reach second on a ground out before advancing to third on a wild pitch. The junior would come around to score on a throwing error which gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

Four consecutive batters reached for the Eagles in their half of the first inning which would plate two runs. A sacrifice fly and a single scored another two runs as the hosts would lead 4-1 through the first inning.

A leadoff home run by senior Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.) got a five-run second inning going for the Hawks. A pair of singles brought Clough to the plate who would double down the right field line to score Panarello. Doran followed with a sacrifice fly before classmate Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) posted a RBI single. The Hawks would plate another run on an error, taking a 6-4 lead in the second inning.

Saint Anselm tacked on three more runs in the third as Clough singled home Panarello, who led off the inning with a double. Doran and Borrelli would record a pair of two-out singles, both of which brought home a run to extend the lead to 9-4.

Robert Olah plated a run for Post in the bottom of third with a RBI groundout, pushing the score to 9-5.

After leading off the inning with a hit by pitch, Pierro would come around to score on a single by junior Richie Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) which reestablished the five-run lead for Saint Anselm.

A double by Doran would plate Collins in the top of the fifth inning, giving the Hawks an 11-5 advantage.

Post would score two runs in the sixth before Saint Anselm got one back in the seventh. Saint Anselm later struck for three runs in the eighth inning as Clough and Collins registered a RBI single each which allowed Doran to add another with a sacrifice fly, extending the Hawks lead to 15-7.

The Eagles responded with three of their own in the bottom of the eighth but a single in the ninth by Panarello brought home Elmore who led off with a walk, pushing the score to 16-10. French would come on in relief in the bottom of the ninth to close the game down for the Hawks.

GAME TWO: POST 7, SAINT ANSELM 4

The Eagles opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of runs. Damaurys Rodriguez would plate two runners with a base hit, both of which recorded a pair of singles to lead off the frame.

Saint Anselm would strike for three in the second inning. After a pair of walks, sophomore Danny Kent (Hanson, Mass.) singled to load the bases. Clough would plate two runners as he reached on an error before a Collins single gave Saint Anselm a 3-2 lead.

Post tied the contest in the bottom of the second as Michael Pavelchak singled to plate Hunter Keller, making the score 3-3.

After Saint Anselm took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth as Collins reached on an error, plating freshman Ben Rose (Webster, N.H.), Post crossed the plate twice in its half of the inning to take a 5-4 edge.

A two-run single in the bottom of the sixth pushed the Eagles lead to 7-4 following a single by Pavelchak.
