PREVIEW: Men's ice hockey battles Franklin Pierce in NE10 Semifinals

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The top-seeded Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey hosts the fifth-seeded Franklin Pierce University Ravens in a Northeast-10 Conference Semifinal game from Sullivan Arena on Saturday, Feb. 25.

Admission for all rounds of the Championship will be $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and youth, and NE10 students are free with a valid ID. Tickets will be available upon entry to Sullivan Arena.

The Hawks captured their 15th NE10 regular season title with a 4-1 win over the Ravens on Feb. 18, improving the team to 19-10-3 overall and 13-5-2 in conference games. Saint Anselm registered 40 points in the NE10 standings and closed the regular season with a 5-0-1 record against conference opponents.

The Ravens advanced to the semifinals with a 3-1 win over fourth-seeded Southern New Hampshire University on Feb. 21. Franklin Pierce closed the regular season with a 7-11-2 record against the NE10, good for 22 points. Following the First Round win, Franklin Pierce is now 11-19-2 on the 2022-23 season.

The winner of this semifinal game will advance to the NE10 Championship game and will face the winner of the other semifinal, which features the second-seed Saint Michael's College and the third-seed Assumption University. The Championship game will be hosted on Saturday, Mar. 4 by the highest remaining seed in the postseason tournament.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Senior co-captain Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.) is tied for fifth in the NE10 with 27 points. Hayes has scored eight goals and assisted on 19 others, which is tied for second in the conference with classmate Jack Murphy (Marshfield, Mass.). Murphy has scored three goals to add with his 19 helpers for 22 points this season.
  • Senior co-captain Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) is fifth in the conference with 13 goals. Andary is tied with Murphy and sophomore Chase Reynolds (Middletown, Conn.) for second on the squad at 22 points. Reynolds is second on the Hawks in both goals (10) and assists (12).
  • Junior Liam Lyons (Gloucester, Mass.) closed the regular season on a five-game point streak. Lyons scored two goals and assisted on three others during that stretch which gives him 15 points on the season.
  • The Hawks have 14 student-athletes who have reached 10 or more points in 2022-23. Saint Anselm has 19 wins this season which are the second most in a single season, trailing only the 2003-04 team that won 20 games in that season.
  • Senior goaltender Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) became the program's single-season leader in saves on Saturday, surpassing Matt Delguidice who held the record since the 1986-87 season. Howard ranks fifth in program history with 1,910 saves and needs 47 saves to move into fourth.
  • Howard also has 36 career wins, which are tied for third most in program history. With one win, the senior can tie Tom Gavin '75 and Jim Merola '05 at the top with 37 goaltending victories.
  • The senior leads the NE10 in total saves (831) and in goals-against average (2.55) while ranking third in save percentage (0.920). Howard has started in 28 games this season and owns a 16-9-3 record this season.
  • The Saint Anselm power play has scored 18 goals in 110 power play chances, good for a 16.4% success rate. The penalty kill, which is the top mark in the NE10 at 83.5%, has allowed 21 goals in 127 times shorthanded.
SCOUTING FRANKLIN PIERCE
  • Conor Foley and Chris Stevenson rank one and two in the NE10 with 34 points and 32 points each respectively. Foley has scored 16 goals and assisted on 18 others while Stevenson has scored 10 goals and assisted on a conference-high 22.
  • Trevor Lawler and Cody Rumsey are tied for third on the team with 25 points apiece. Lawler is tied with Foley and is tied for second on the roster with 18 assists while Rumsey follows closely with 17 helpers.
  • The Ravens offense has 12 student-athletes with 10 or more points this season. The team has netted 100 goals while giving up 136 this season.
  • Kyle Martin has started in 23 games in 2022-23 and holds a 3.08 goals-against average and 0.921. Martin in 10-8-2 from the goal this season.
  • The Franklin Pierce power play holds the top spot in the conference at 23.3% coming from 27 goals in 116 opportunities. The Ravens penalty kill ranks third in the NE10 with a 78.7% penalty kill rate (32-150).
ALL-TIME, NE10 POSTSEASON
  • Saint Anselm has won a conference-high 10 titles and has been to 17 NE10 Championship games. The most recent conference crown for the Hawks came in the 2017-18 season.
  • The program's most recent appearance in the title game came in the 2018-19 season which saw the Hawks fall to the Penmen by a 4-3 score.
  • The men's ice hockey program owns a 27-12-0 record in the NE10 postseason, good for a 0.692 winning percentage.
  • The Hawks and Ravens have met just once in the postseason, coming in the title game of the 2012-13 championship game, which went Saint Anselm's way for their fourth-consecutive conference crown.
ALL-TIME vs. FRANKLIN PIERCE
  • This will be the fifth meeting of the season and the third time since Feb. 17 between Saint Anselm and Franklin Pierce. The Hawks enjoy a 27-4-1 record against the Ravens in men's ice hockey, making this the 33rd meeting between the two sides all-time.
  • During the regular season, Saint Anselm posted a 3-0-1 record against Franklin Pierce. The Hawks opened the series with an 8-2 win on Jan. 13 before the teams skated to a 1-1 tie on Jan. 31.
  • Saint Anselm took both games in Winchendon, Mass. by 5-3 and 4-1 scores on Feb. 17 and Feb. 18 to close the regular season.
  • When playing in Sullivan Arena, Saint Anselm holds a 15-1-1 record against Franklin Pierce all-time.
