PREVIEW: Men's basketball to conclude regular-season slate vs. New Haven

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball concludes the regular season on Tuesday, Feb. 21, heading to the University of New Haven for a 7:30 p.m. showdown.

Saint Anselm has compiled an 18-7 overall record alongside a Northeast-10 Conference mark of 14-5. The Hawks are fresh off an 89-72 victory over Saint Michael's on Saturday, reaching 80 points in a game for the 10th time in 2022-23.

New Haven, winners of the Jan. 7 game at Saint Anselm, have racked up a 17-8 overall record while winning 13 of the team's 19 games against NE10 foes. The Chargers have won two games in a row and have been dominant at home, winning 11-of-12.

The winner of Tuesday's contest will secure a First Round bye in the upcoming NE10 postseason.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Sophomore Zac Taylor (Victoria, Australia) poured in a team-high 20 points for the Hawks against Saint Michael's, including 18 in the second half. Taylor was one of five Hawks to register double-digit point totals.
  • Saturday's victory was keyed by a dominant 19-0 scoring run in the game's opening half. The Hawks shot over 53% from the floor and turned the Purple Knights over 11 times.
  • The Hawks are ranked 10th in NCAA Division II in fouls committed per game (13.3) and fifth in three-point field goal percentage (40.6%). The Hawks also lead the NE10 with 9.6 three-point baskets made per game.
  • Senior Miles Tention (Palo Alto, Calif.) is averaging 38:12 minutes played per game this season, ranking third in NCAA Division II, while classmate Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.) is 12th nationally with 36:59 per tilt. Tention also leads the NE10 in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.96).
  • Junior Matt Becker (Fairfield, Conn.) and senior Owen McGlashan (Marlton, N.J.) rank sixth and eighth, respectively, in the NE10 with 7.6 and 7.0 rebounds per game. Becker's 5.88 defensive rebounds per game is fourth in the league and McGlashan is cleaning the offensive glass at a 2.04/game rate.
  • Keith Dickson, in his 36th season leading the Saint Anselm program, owns a career record of 699-360 (.660).

SCOUTING NEW HAVEN

  • The Chargers lead NCAA Division II in fouls per game (10.6) and the team's 39.6% field goal percentage defense is sixth in the country. The team also chips in with 29.2 defensive rebounds per game, the 10th most among the nearly 300 teams in the division.
  • New Haven's defense has conceded just 63.4 points per game, on average, the best metric in the NE10. Earlier this season, the Chargers kept Saint Anselm to just 63 points scored in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium, a venue where the Hawks have scored 80.5 points per game.
  • Majur Majak is ranked second nationally in defensive rebounds per game (9.08), third in blocks per game (2.84), third in rebounds (287), third in rebounds per game (11.5) and fourth in total blocks (71).
  • Victor Olawoje is second in the league with a 1.95 assist-to-turnover ratio, trailing only Saint Anselm's Tention, and Quashawn Lane has an 84.4% free throw percentage to rank third in the league. Lane's 14.6 points per game is the 10th-finest figure in the conference.
  • New Haven ranks last in the NE10 in three-point field goal percentage (30.5%) and three point baskets per game (6.6).

ALL-TIME vs. NEW HAVEN

  • Saturday's meeting marks the 32nd meeting in the all-time series with New Haven – the Hawks enjoy a 20-11 record against the Chargers.
  • Saint Anselm and New Haven have met regularly in NCAA and NE10 postseason play. The Chargers most recently downed the Hawks, 78-70, in the Quarterfinals round of last season's NCAA Division II East Region Championship.
  • The Hawks did secure a thrilling 81-79 overtime victory over New Haven in the NE10 Quarterfinals just two weeks prior. Prior to that, Saint Anselm was a 65-63 overtime winner in the 2020 NE10 Championship on Mar. 7, 2020.
