PREVIEW: Women's basketball heads to Assumption, returns home for Saint Michael's

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team heads to nationally-ranked Assumption University on Wednesday before hosting Saint Michael's College on Saturday.

Saint Anselm owns an 11-12 overall record alongside a mark of 7-10 versus Northeast-10 Conference opponents. The Hawks are presently ranked eighth in the league – all 13 teams will qualify for postseason play.

Assumption is ranked No. 23 in NCAA Division II, according to the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association, and is receiving votes in the D2SIDA Media Poll. The Greyhounds are off to their best start in many years, compiling a 20-4 record alongside a 13-4 mark in the conference.

Saint Michael's owns a record of 1-20 this season and remains without a victory in NE10 play since Feb. 12, 2022 against Franklin Pierce. The Purple Knights picked up a 73-64 victory against Mercy (N.Y.) on Nov. 12 of this season and have since lost 19 in a row – the team hosts No. 21 Le Moyne on Wednesday.

The Hawks will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday against Saint Michael's and will recognize the achievements of McKenzy Ouellette (West Newfield, Maine), Macy Spinks (Luton, England) and Liv Robles (Wallingford, Conn.).

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Last time out, Saint Anselm posted a 79-60 loss at Franklin Pierce University on Saturday. Sophomore Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, Conn.) had 14 points at halftime, finishing with 18 points and five rebounds to her credit. Junior Gabby Turco (Wildwood, N.J.) scored 12 points and posted six rebounds along with three steals.
  • Franklin Pierce pulled away in the third quarter with a pair of six-point scoring runs that opened the game up to a nine-point lead, 51-42, with 2:56 left. At one point in the third, Franklin Pierce had scored 21 of the game's 29 points, making seven of its nine shots, and taking advantage of seven Hawks miscues.
  • Saint Anselm leads the NE10 and is ranked eighth in NCAA Division II in free throw shooting, making 78.5% of its attempts at the charity stripe this season.
  • Turco has made 91.5% of her free throws this season, ranking fifth in the nation. Her 118 made free throws ranks 13th nationally and she is 42nd in attempts (129).
  • Three of the last five opponents that Saint Anselm has played shot over 55% from the floor.
  • Robles, a senior, is enjoying a career year for the Hawks, averaging 11.2 points and 7.7 rebounds per game after averaging just 3.44 points per tilt across the prior two seasons. Earlier this season, she poured home a career-high 23 points at Bentley, the team's first win in Waltham since the mid-1990's.
  • Ouellette has seen action in 75 games for Saint Anselm and is averaging 5.7 points per game as a senior, a career-high figure. Across 74 games played entering the week, Spinks has handed out 198 career assist and is averaging 4.7 points per game this season.

SCOUTING ASSUMPTION

  • The Greyhounds have reached 20 victories for the first time since 2012-13 and lead the nation in scoring defense, conceding just 49.6 points per game. The team's +13.8 scoring margin is 20th in the country and ranks atop the NE10.
  • The Hounds also allow opposing shooters to a 32.7% field goal percentage, the second-lowest figure in all of NCAA Division II. Defensively, the squad forces its opponents into 18.08 turnovers per game, the second-best rate in the NE10.
  • Molly Stokes leads the NE10 in three-point baskets per game (2.62), three-point baskets (63) and three-point attempts (169). Amanda Mieczkowski ranks fourth in the NE10 in assists per game (3.6) and Monica Spain has proven to be a valuable rebounder, averaging 4.8 defensive caroms per contest.

SCOUTING SAINT MICHAEL'S

  • Saint Michael's leads the NE10 in blocked shots per game (3.8) and is second in three-point attempts per game (19.3). The team is dead last among all NCAA Division II programs in free throw attempts per game (10.33) and free throws made per game (6.14).
  • Anika Kapral leads the NE10 in blocked shots per game (1.57) and is second with 33 blocks. Emma MacDonough has attempted 130 triples this season, ranking fifth in the NE10, and her 32.98 minutes played per game is 12th among the league's student-athletes.
  • Last time out, the Purple Knights fired off 16 of the fourth quarter's 25 points, but its comeback came up short in a 49-40 defeat at New Haven. MacDonough led the way with 12 points while Brianna Furch had team-best totals of five rebounds and four assists.
  • Saint Michael's has the second longest active NCAA Division II women's basketball losing streak (19 games).

ALL-TIME vs. ASSUMPTION

  • Saint Anselm is 53-31 (.631) in the all-time series with Assumption, winning six of the last eight games. The Hawks won 35 of the first 41 games played against the Greyhounds in team history.
  • Last season, the Greyhounds picked up a 67-47 victory over the Hawks in Manchester on Feb. 2. Saint Anselm flipped the script just eight days later, logging a road victory in Worcester by a 60-47 margin.
  • Earlier this season, Assumption locked down a 65-57 win over the Hawks in Stoutenburgh Gym.

ALL-TIME vs. SAINT MICHAEL'S

  • Saint Anselm holds the edge in the all-time series, 57-24. The 57 victories by the Hawks are the most against any opponent in team history, just ahead of Assumption (53) and Southern New Hampshire/New Hampshire College (52).
  • The Hawks have won each of the last 10 games against the Purple Knights dating back to Feb. 11, 2017. Saint Anselm also enjoys a modest four-game winning streak over Saint Michael's in Vermont.
  • Saint Anselm owns a six-game winning streak over Saint Michael's in games played at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
