HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Franklin Pierce started the game on fire, knocking down four of their first six attempts from the floor including two from beyond-the-arc, to jump out to an early 10-0 advantage.
- Junior Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) got the first basket to go for Saint Anselm almost five minutes into the contest, but it was all Ravens in the first quarter as they culminated the first 10 minutes with a 21-4 lead and allowed just the one made field goal for the Hawks.
- Sophomore Tatum Forbes (Pawtucket, R.I.) got the Hawks going by knocking down a three-pointer early in the second quarter to make it a 23-9 deficit. Saint Anselm attempted to close the gap midway through the quarter with Hoyt cashing in on four straight Hawk points and Forbes drilling another three. Junior Marta Pons Gomez (Sevilla, Spain) also converted on an and-one opportunity with 1:32 in the half, but the Ravens headed into the locker room with a 35-22 lead.
- Saint Anselm showed a strong defensive effort to begin the third, holding Franklin Pierce scoreless in the first three minutes. During that stretch, the Hawks trimmed the lead down to single digits, trailing by nine after a made layup from Hoyt off a feed from fifth-year Liv Robles (Wallingford, Conn.). However, the Ravens responded with a 5-0 run and maintained their 14-point lead to start the fourth quarter.
- Franklin Pierce began to pull away in the final period, outscoring the home team 22-11 to end the game. Hoyt converted on two more field goals and sophomore Anna Nelson (Gorham, Maine) knocked down a triple, but the Ravens increased their lead to as many as 29 points in the fourth and would run away with the road victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Saint Anselm had a tough night shooting, making only 28.9% (13-45) of their shots, including just 21.4% (3-14) from beyond-the-arc. Franklin Pierce shot 44.4% (24-54) from the field including 33.3% (5-15) from deep.
- Both teams shot well from the free throw line, with the Ravens making 14 of 16 and the Hawks knocking down 13 of 15 free throws.
- The Ravens outscored the Hawks 30-16 in points in the paint and also outscored the Hawks 37-9 in bench points.
- Hoyt (17 points) and Forbes (10 points) were the only Saint Anselm players to register double-figures in the scoring column. It was a well-balanced scoring effort from Franklin Pierce with eight different players registering four or more points, led by Kenzie Sirowich who dropped in a team-high 16 points.
- This marked the 65th all-time meeting between these programs with Saint Anselm falling to 39-26 in the all-time series against Franklin Pierce.
