HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Penmen fired the opening two shots of the game forcing early saves from freshman goalie Cam Caroll (Putnam Valley, N.Y.). Southern N.H. and Saint Anselm continued to exchange shots as the period progressed with Penmen goalie Sean Guerin registering six saves. At the 12:19 mark, junior Will van der Veen (Duxbury, Mass.) almost put the Hawks on the scoreboard after ripping a shot that would hit the pipe.
  • At the start of the second period, Saint Anselm went on the man-advantage following a tripping call on the Penmen. Junior Chase Reynolds (Middletown, Conn.) capitalized on the opportunity and found the back of the net off the helper from classmate Hunter Brackett (Harwick Port, Mass.) to give the Hawks a 1-0 edge. A few minutes later, van der Veen would double Saint Anselm's lead at the 6:15 mark for his second goal of the season.
  • Midway through the second period, Ryan Pomposelli cut into the Hawks lead after scoring at the 12:09 mark. Senior Alec Grace (Laguna Hills, Calif.) answered for Saint Anselm shortly after by netting his fourth goal of the year to give the Hawks a two-goal cushion. Freshman Steve Armstrong (Victor, N.Y.) and sophomore Alex Hoitt (East Bridgewater, Mass.) each posted a block apiece in the last five minutes of the period to preserve Saint Anselm's 3-1 advantage heading into the break.
  • Carroll stood his ground early in the third period after recording 10 saves in the first seven minutes of play. Stone Devlin scored at the 7:53 mark for Southern N.H. to make it a 3-2 game. The Hawks attack responded by firing five consecutive shots on frame that Guerin was able to deny until senior Tommy Schwartz (Ridgefield, Conn.) broke through to put Saint Anselm back up, 4-2, with eight minutes left in the game.
  • Southern N.H. continued to apply pressure to Saint Anselm's defense as the period neared its end, resulting in a goal by Tucker Twardosky at the 14:57 mark. The Hawks were undeterred and kept battling, outshooting the Penmen 11-3 in the remaining five minutes of the contest, securing the 4-3 road win against Southern N.H.
