Women's Basketball Drops Season-Opener to Mercy

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Fifth-year Liv Robles (Wallingford, Conn.) and junior Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) each recorded 13 points, while sophomore Tatum Forbes (Pawtucket, R.I.) chipped in 11 in her Hawks debut, but it was not enough as the Saint Anselm College women's basketball team fell 62-58 in the team's season-opener on Saturday afternoon to Mercy University.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After a 4-0 run to start the game for Mercy, Saint Anselm controlled the remainder of the opening stanza, twice building slim four-point leads before closing out the quarter up 15-11
  • In the second quarter, Mercy chipped away at the Hawks' lead before pulling in front and building the game's largest lead, 28-23, at the half.
  • Midway through the third, Mercy pulled in front by as many as nine points, 41-32, before the Hawks used a 10-2 run capped by back-to-back three-pointers from Forbes and sophomore Anna Nelson (Gorham, Maine), which pulled Saint Anselm to within a point. A pair of Maverick free-throws just before the end of the quarter made the score 45-42 headed to the fourth.
  • Mercy clung to a narrow lead for the first half of the game's final quarter before Saint Anselm knotted the score at 53-53 with 5:48 remaining in the contest. The Hawks nailed six consecutive free throws to help tie the score.
  • However, Mercy closed the contest on a 9-4 run to capture the win in the season-opener for both teams.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Saint Anselm finished 21-48 (43.8%) from the floor, but just 4-for-16 (25%) from beyond the three-point arc. Mercy finished 19-51 (37.3%) from the floor and made 19 of their 26 free throws (73.1%).
  • Mercy's Katie Wall carried the Mavericks with 40 points on 12-of-20 shooting and added eight rebounds.
  • Hoyt added a team-best seven rebounds to her double-digit scoring night, while Forbes grabbed six and dished out a team-high four assists.
  • The win for the Mavericks marked their first over Saint Anselm in the all-time series, as Saint Anselm held a 6-0 series lead prior to the loss.
