HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Back-to-back kills from Frano and freshman Melis Kocak (East Greenwich, R.I.) gave Saint Anselm an early 3-2 edge in the first set of the match. After Pace strung three points together to take an 8-6 lead, the Hawks built a 4-1 run finished off by a service ace from freshman Sam Pila (Melbourne, Australia) to go ahead 10-9. Saint Anselm briefly fell behind 12-10 before generating a 7-1 run featuring a kill apiece from seniors Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz.) and Audrey Wetjen (Henderson, Nev.) as well as an ace by junior Alina Barbarena (Los Angeles, Calif.). The Setters kept the set score close however the Hawks would secure the first set win, 25-20, thanks to a kill by Brown and an ace from Pila to take the 1-0 lead.
  • In the second set, Frano tallied two quick kills to help even the score at 4-4. Pace jumped ahead to an 8-5 advantage thanks to a kill from Brielle Jones. Saint Anselm answered by going on an 8-1 run highlighted by a pair of Pila service aces and two kills apiece from Kocak and Frano to make it 13-9 Hawks. Shortly after, Pace responded with their own 7-1 run to take a two-point advantage late in the set. The Setters continued to extend their lead to 22-7 following a 4-0 run, but the Hawks battled back capitalizing on Pace errors coupled with two Frano kills and another ace from Barbarena to claim the 27-25 win in set two.
  • Pace took a quick 4-0 lead to open the scoring in the third set. Frano registered two kills in a row to tie the set at 6-6 which was soon followed by a service ace from junior Jada Burdier (Haverhill, Mass.) to give the Hawks a 9-8 edge. The Setters took a 14-13 lead thanks to a pair of kills from Karielys Melendez. Frano responded by registering two kills and an ace in a 4-1 run to regain a 17-15 advantage.
