Men's Ice Hockey Taken Down by Plattsburgh State in Season Opener

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Visiting Plattsburgh State picked up their first win of the season on Friday evening, defeating the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team by a final score of 6-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Plattsburgh State came out firing early, scoring two goals in the first seven minutes of action. Aaron Catron opened the scoring for the Cardinals 2:15 into the first period, while Benson Jagger doubled their lead at the 6:39 mark of the opening frame. The Cardinals went into the locker room up 3-0 after Ryan Bonfield put his team ahead 3-0 on a power play goal with just over one minute remaining in the first.
  • The Cardinals cashed in on the man-advantage once again 2:26 into the second period on a goal by Jake Lanyi. Joshua Belgrave and Bennett Stockdale also scored in the second period to put Plattsburgh State up, 6-0.
  • In the third period, senior Liam Lyons (Gloucester, Mass.) put the Hawks on the board with Saint Anselm's first goal of the season. It was assisted by senior Alec Grace (Laguna Hills, Calif.) and sophomore Alex Hoitt (East Bridgewater, Mass.).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Plattsburgh State recorded 39 shots on goal in the game, while Saint Anselm put 27 pucks on frame.
  • The Cardinals had a successful night on the power play, going three for five with 10 shots during the man advantage.
  • Freshman goaltender Cam Carroll (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) made 33 saves in his debut in goal for the Hawks. Jacob Hearne made 26 saves in goal for the Cardinals.
  • This marks the 2nd all-time meeting between Saint Anselm and Plattsburgh State, with the Hawks falling to a 1-1-0 overall record against the Cardinals.
