Women's Soccer Surges Past Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. - Senior Olivia Gotobed (North Andover, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season and junior Josie Pecor (Williston, Vt.) added a goal and an assist to lead the Saint Anselm College women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout victory over in-state rival Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • It was a slow offensive start for both teams, with the first shot not being registered until the 21st minute. However, Saint Anselm capitalized on that chance with Pecor finding the back of the net after spinning around her defender following a long ball from senior Delaney Glode (Kennebunkport, Maine) to put the Hawks ahead, 1-0.
  • Franklin Pierce got their first opportunity just three minutes later, but Roos Monsma's shot was stopped by freshman goalkeeper Maggie Warner (Saugus, Mass.).
  • Gotobed fired her first shot of the match in the 30th minute, but Ravens goalkeeper Emilie Fox collected it for her first save of the game.
  • After heading into halftime with the narrow lead, Saint Anselm quickly got the offense going in the second half and found an insurance goal just over 10 minutes in.  Gotobed applied pressure in the attacking third and forced the Ravens to turn the ball over at the top of their 18-yard box. The senior midfielder made a quick give-and-go combination with Pecor before faking a right-footed shot and blasting a left-footed shot past Fox to double Saint Anselm's lead.
  • Franklin Pierce earned a few more corner-kicks, but only got one more shot on goal in the second half that Warner denied as Saint Anselm held on for the victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Saint Anselm outshot Franklin Pierce in the game by a four to three margin. The Hawks also held a four to two advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Hawks had four corner-kicks in the match, while the Ravens had five.
  • Warner recorded two saves in her fifth career shutout in goal for the Hawks, while Fox tallied three saves in goal for the Ravens.
  • Pecor scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season and also dished out her third assist.
  • This marked the 41st all-time meeting between Saint Anselm and Franklin Pierce, with the Hawks improving to a 6-33-2 overall record against the Ravens. The win marks the second victory for Saint Anselm over Franklin Pierce this season. It is also the first time in program history that the Hawks have defeated the Ravens twice in the same season.
