PREVIEW: Women's ice hockey returns to NEWHA play at LIU

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team returns to New England Women's Hockey Alliance play with a pair of road tilts against Long Island University on Friday, Jan. 6 and Saturday, Jan. 7.

The Hawks suffered a pair of 4-2 losses to Hockey East opponents in Merrimack College and the University of New Hampshire on Dec. 31 and Jan. 2. Saint Anselm now sits at 11-11-1 on the season and holds a 10-3-1 record in NEWHA tilts entering the 2023 half of the season. Following the trip to East Meadow, N.Y., the Hawks host nationally-ranked Yale University in their final non-league contest of the season on Tuesday, Jan. 10.

The Sharks dropped two contests to nationally-ranked Penn State on Dec. 30 and Dec. 31 by 4-3 and 4-1 scores, pushing their record to 11-10-1 overall. Following the weekend series with the Hawks, Long Island is set for a home-and-home series with Post University on Friday, Jan. 13 and Saturday, Jan. 14.

Saint Anselm and Long Island are tied for the top spot in the NEWHA standings with 21 points apiece.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Graduate student Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) became just the ninth Saint Anselm student-athlete to reach 100 career points with an assist against Merrimack. Golini wasted no time in getting her 101st as she opened the scoring against New Hampshire and is riding a seven-game point streak. On the stretch, Golini has netted six goals and assisted on five assists for 11 points.
  • On the season, Golini ranks second on the team with 24 points, coming from 12 goals and 12 assists, both of which also rank second on the squad. Junior Natalie Tulchinsky (Clifton Park, N.Y.) leads the Hawks and the NEWHA in goals (14), assists (13), and points (27).
  • Sophomore Audrey Jackson (Shoreview, Minn.) netted one goal in each game against the Hockey East opponents which included a spectacular goal on New Year's Eve which was featured on ESPN's SportsCenter Top 10. Jackson is also riding a seven-game point streak entering the series against the Sharks and is fourth on the Hawks roster with 17 points, coming from six goals and 11 assists.
  • Sophomore Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) is third on the Hawks roster with 20 points coming from nine goals and 11 assists.
  • Junior Savannah Popick (South Windsor, Conn.) was named the NEWHA Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after blocking five shots in the pair of games against Merrimack and New Hampshire.
  • Senior Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) leads all of the National Collegiate level with 725 saves on the season. Kelley owns a 2.96 goals-against average and a 0.918 save percentage. Kelley turned aside 80 shots on goal against the Warriors and the Wildcats.
  • The Saint Anselm power play has netted 13 goals on 96 chances, good for a 13.5 conversion rate. The penalty kill is operating at 83.2%. The team has been shorthanded on 101 occasions and has allowed 17 goals in those scenarios.
SCOUTING LONG ISLAND
  • Abby Latorella and Tindra Holm collected the league's Player of the Week and Goaltender of the Week honors on Tuesday. Latorella was credited with at least one point in four non-league games against Minnesota State and Penn State while Holm posted 105 saves in the pair of tilts with the Nittany Lions.
  • Latorella is tied with Jeannie Wallner for the top spot on the Sharks roster at 16 points each. Latorella leads the team with 10 assists while Wallner has a team-high nine goals.
  • Carrigan Umpherville is third on the squad with 14 points. Umpherville is second on the Sharks with nine assists while ranking third in goals (5).
  • Holm is the NEWHA leader with a 0.938 save percentage and is second in total saves at 562 and goals-against average at 2.13.
  • The Sharks power play sits at 12.5% with nine goals in 72 power play chances. The penalty kill has allowed 19 goals in 70 times shorthanded, good for a 72.9 penalty kill percentage.
ALL-TIME vs. LONG ISLAND
  • The weekend series marks the 13th and 14th meetings in the all-time series between the Hawks and Sharks. Saint Anselm is 6-5-1 against Long Island.
  • The squads split their two-game set from Sullivan Arena on Oct. 21 and Oct. 22 with the Hawks grabbing a 3-2 win in the first tilt before the Sharks netted a 2-0 win the following afternoon.
  • Long Island had won four consecutive meetings before a 1-1 tie on Jan. 14, 2022. Following the tie, Saint Anselm won three straight meetings including a 3-1 win in the NEWHA Semifinals on Mar. 4, 2022.
