WINTHROP, Mass. – Junior
Savannah Popick (South Windsor, Conn.) of the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team was named the New England Women's Hockey Alliance Player of the Week on Tuesday.
The Hawks returned to play in the 2022-23 season against a pair of Hockey East opponents in Merrimack College and the University on New Hampshire on Dec. 31 and Jan. 2. Saint Anselm suffered two losses, both by 4-2 scores, and now sits at 11-11-1 on the season. The Hawks enter the second half of the season with a 10-3-1 record in league games and are tied for the top spot in the NEWHA with 21 points.
Popick blocked a team-high five shots in the pair of contests and now has 33 on the season. In the last five games, Popick has posted at least one block and has gone for multiple blocks in three of those five contests. In the five-game stretch, the junior has posted 10 blocked shots.
On the season, Popick leads the Hawks defensive corps with seven points coming from one goal and six assists. Popick's 33 blocks on the season are second most on the Hawks roster. This is the second NEWHA Defensive Player of the Week honor for Popick this season and the third of her collegiate career.
Popick and the Hawks head to Long Island University for a pair of league games on Friday, Jan. 6 and Saturday, Jan. 7.
