PREVIEW: Women's basketball to entertain Assumption, New Haven at home

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Riding a three-game winning streak, the Saint Anselm College women's basketball team will play its next two games at home against Assumption University and the University of New Haven.

Saint Anselm, the owner of a 5-7 overall record and a 2-6 mark against Northeast-10 Conference opponents, will host nationally-ranked Assumption (11-1, 5-1 NE10) on Tuesday, Jan. 4 at 5:30 p.m. New Haven enters the week with a 6-4 (3-4 NE10) record, having lost two straight prior to Tuesday.

The Greyhounds are ranked No. 18 in NCAA Division II by the Division II Sports Information Directors of America and 25th nationally by the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association. New Haven opened the season with three straight wins before dropping four of its last seven games.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Across the team's three-game winning streak, the Hawks are averaging 60.3 points per game while limiting opponents to exactly 52. Three are averaging double-digits in point scoring, including junior Gabby Turco (Wildwood, N.J.) with 15.0 per tilt.
  • Turco leads all NE10 student-athletes in free throws made with 56. Her 88.9% free throw percentage stands as the second-best figure in the league and her 65 field goals are the sixth most in the conference.
  • Sophomore Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) is averaging 14 points and six rebounds across the three-game streak while senior Liv Robles (Wallingford, Conn.) is leading the way defensively with exactly eight rebounds in that time frame. Robles ranks second in the NE10 with 6.8 defensive rebounds per game.
  • Saint Anselm ranks fourth in the NE10 with a 33.8% three point field goal percentage while producing the conference's third-finest team free throw percentage (76.6%).
  • Head Coach Corey Boilard reached 80 career victories at Saint Anselm last time out. He ranks third all-time in program history and dating back to the 2012-13 season where he made his coaching debut at Johnson & Wales (R.I.), he owns a 163-102 (.615) overall record in 10 seasons.
  • The Hawks have lost five of its first seven games at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium after posting a 51-26 (.662) record at home from the 2015-16 season through the end of last season.

SCOUTING ASSUMPTION

  • The Greyhounds find themselves in the national rankings just one season removed from a 12-13 overall record and a 9-10 mark against NE10 opponents. Assumption leads all NCAA Division II programs in field goal percentage defense (32.2%) and is third in overall scoring defense (49.4).
  • Each of the team's starters is averaging at least 6.9 points per game this season and four of those starters are totaling north of 8.4 points per game. Molly Stokes is the clubhouse leader, producing 13.4 points per game in just under 30 minutes per game.
  • Stokes is leading the NE10 in several offensive categories, including three-pointers per game (2.92), three-pointers made (35), and three-point attempts (91). Her 44.8% field goal percentage ranks in the top-10 of NE10 student-athletes.
  • Assumption ranks third in rebounds per game (39.58) among league institutions and rarely fouls, averaging just 13.8 per contest. The Greyhounds are vulnerable when it comes to turnovers, ranking second-to-last in the NE10 with 17.9 per game.
  • Amanda Mieczkowski is totaling 3.8 assists per game and owns a 1.77 assist-to-turnover ratio, ranking fifth in the conference in both metrics.

SCOUTING NEW HAVEN

  • New Haven enters the game against Saint Anselm with a two-game losing skid and will play at home against Dominican (N.Y.) in non-league play this Wednesday.
  • The Chargers are the second-best shooting team in the NE10, averaging a 44.0% field goal percentage. The team also racks up 9.3 steals per game, the third-most in the NE10, and limits opponents to a respectable 58.8 points per game (fifth in the NE10).
  • New Haven has made just seven of its last 38 three-point baskets (18.4%) in its last two games after pouring home at least four in each of the team's first eight games of the season.
  • Aurora Deshaies entered the week with a 67.0% field goal percentage, ranking fourth in the nation and first in the NE10, while Camryn DeBose leads the league with 36.05 minutes played per game. Deshaies is also the league's second-leading rebounder, averaging 10.9 per contest.
  • New Haven enjoys a rebound margin of +7.9, ranking 21st in NCAA Division II while leading all NE10 programs.

ALL-TIME vs. ASSUMPTION, NEW HAVEN

  • Saint Anselm is 53-30 (.639) in the all-time series with Assumption, winning six of the last eight games. The Hawks won 35 of the first 41 games played against the Greyhounds in team history.
  • Last season, the Greyhounds picked up a 67-47 victory over the Hawks in Manchester on Feb. 2. Saint Anselm flipped the script just eight days later, logging a road victory in Worcester by a 60-47 margin.
  • Saint Anselm owns a 16-12 edge in the 28-game series against New Haven, having won each of the last three games. In the 2020 NE10 postseason, the Hawks came away with a 55-44 victory over the Chargers in the league's quarterfinal round.
  • New Haven won the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship in 1987.
