MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie against in-state foe Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday night from Sullivan Arena.
The Hawks move to 14-9-2 on the season with a 9-5-2 record in Northeast-10 Conference battles while the Ravens go to 9-14-1 overall and 6-7-1 in conference tilts. Saint Anselm is back in action on Friday, Feb. 3 when Saint Michael's College comes to the Hilltop for a 7 p.m. opening puck drop.
Senior goaltender
Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) moved into sixth in program history, surpassing
Shane Joyce '18, in career saves after stopping 33 of 34 Ravens shots on goal in the contest. Howard has turned aside 1,741 shots in his time on the Hilltop.
After a scoreless opening two periods, the Hawks struck first just 57 seconds in the final regulation period. Senior co-alternate captain
Jack Murphy (Marshfield, Mass.) fired a wrist shot from the point on the power play, beating Franklin Pierce netminder
Kyle Martin in the upper right of the goal. The tally marked the first of the season for Murphy.
The Ravens would tie the contest in the final minute of the third frame, with the goaltender pulled, as
Jason Ladzinski redirected a shot from
Stephen Jacobs that just found its way over the goal line.
Franklin Pierce controlled most of the possession in the five minute three-on-three overtime and held a 4-1 edge in shots on goal. However, neither side managed to light the lamp as the game closed in a 1-1 draw.
Earlier in the game, Saint Anselm had a great chance to score late in the first period as sophomore
Chase Reynolds (Middletown, Conn.) grabbed a carom in the neutral zone and was in on a shorthanded breakaway. However, Martin made the save on the scoring chance.
Franklin Pierce nearly opened the scoring at 5:45 of the second period as
Chris Stevenson fired a snap shot that beat Howard, but rang off the post.
The Hawks had another great chance to score, this one late in the second period. Martin turned aside a shot from Reynolds and junior
Liam Lyons (Gloucester, Mass.) had a near open net from the doorstep but his shot attempt was off-target.
Franklin Pierce held a 34-33 advantage in shots on goal in the contest. Saint Anselm won 33 of the game's 57 faceoffs and were led by senior co-captain
Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.) who posted a 16-9 record from the dots.
Murphy and senior
