PREVIEW: Men's Ice Hockey to host Franklin Pierce, Saint Michael's in three-game week

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team will battle Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday, Jan. 31 before a weekend series against Saint Michael's College on Friday, Feb. 3 and Saturday, Feb. 4, all from the friendly confines of Sullivan Arena.

Prior to the start of Saturday's 4 p.m. opening puck drop against the Purple Knights, the Hawks will honor their six seniors with a pregame Senior Day ceremony.

The Hawks split a weekend series with the Eagles of Post University, dropping the Jan. 27 battle by a 4-2 score before responding with a 4-1 win the following day. Saint Anselm is now 14-9-1 on the season with a 9-5-1 record in Northeast-10 Conference play. After the three-game week, the Hawks have a pair of non-conference games on Friday, Feb. 10 at Anna Maria College and on Saturday, Feb. 11 at in-state foe Rivier University.

The Ravens dropped a pair of NE10 battles to Assumption University on Jan. 27 and Jan. 28 by 6-3 and 5-4 scores. Franklin Pierce is now 9-14-0 overall and 6-7-0 in conference play and will head to Southern New Hampshire University on Friday, Feb. 3 and Saturday, Feb. 4 following the weekday trip to the Hilltop.

The Purple Knights swept a weekend pair from the Penmen on Jan. 27 and Jan. 28 by 6-1 and 5-1 scores. With the sweep, Saint Michael's moved to 9-9-1 overall and 8-5-1 in NE10 tilts. The team hosts Assumption on Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11 in their final home games of the 2022-23 regular season.

HAWKS NOTES
  • The Hawks will honor seniors Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.), Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.), Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.), Mark Leach (Londonderry, N.H.), Chris Lemay (Salem, N.H.), and Jack Murphy (Marshfield, Mass.) prior to Saturday's opening puck drop with a Senior Day ceremony.
  • Saint Anselm enters the Tuesday battle with five conference games left in its regular season with three of them coming against the Ravens. The Hawks have a total of 28 points in the conference standings which are good for second, trailing Assumption by just two points.
  • The team has now reached at least 13 wins in each of the last five full seasons of competition and have a chance to reach 17 wins, which was last reached in the 2017-18 season. 
  • Hayes registered two assists in the win over Post on Saturday and now leads the Hawks with 21 points coming from seven goals and 14 assists. The senior co-captain is tied for fifth in the NE10 in points and is tied for fourth in assists.
  • Andary is second on the squad with 20 points. He has netted a team-high 11 goals and has added nine assists. Compared to the rest of the NE10, Andary is tied for ninth in points and fourth in goals.
  • Murphy ranks fourth in the conference in assists with 15. His 15 points are good for fifth on the roster, trailing sophomore Chase Reynolds (Middletown, Conn.) and junior Tommy Schwartz (Ridgefield, Conn.) who have 17 points (9 G, 8 A) and 16 points (9 G, 7 A) each respectively.
  • Howard leads the NE10 in goals-against average (2.76) and saves (629) while ranking second in save percentage (0.916). Howard has started 21 games in the goal for the Hawks and holds a 12-8-1 record.
  • Howard ranks fourth in team history with 32 wins and needs five in the remainder of the season to tie Tom Gavin '75 and Jim Merola '05 who posted 37 goaltending wins each. Howard is seventh all-time with 1,708 career saves and can surpass Shane Joyce '18 with 33 saves. Howard has a career save percentage of 0.910 which is third highest in program history.
  • The Saint Anselm power play has netted 10 goals in 81 power play chances, good for a 12.3% conversion rate which sixth-best in the NE10. The Hawks own the top penalty kill rate in the conference at 85.7%, having allowed 14 goals in 98 times shorthanded.
SCOUTING FRANKLIN PIERCE
  • The Ravens are tied for fourth in the conference standings with 17 points. However, the Ravens have played the least amount of games against NE10 foes at 13.
  • Conor Foley has netted 15 goals and assisted on 17 others for 32 points. Foley leads the NE10 in goals and points while sitting in a tie for the top spot in assists.
  • Chris Stevenson is tied with Foley with 17 helpers. Stevenson has added seven goals to bring him to 24 points which are second most in the NE10.
  • Devin Rohrich has netted eight goals which are second most on the team while Cody Rumsey is third on the squad with 12 assists. The Ravens have eight student-athletes who have double-digit point totals this season.
  • Kyle Martin has drawn 14 starts in the goal for the Ravens. Martin is 8-5-0 with a 3.05 goals-against average and a 0.914 save percentage. Martin has totaled 417 saves in 2022-23. Compared to the rest of the NE10 goaltenders, Martin is third in goals-against average and save percentage while ranking fifth in saves.
  • Franklin Pierce leads the NE10 with a 24.4% power play rate, netting 20 goals in 82 chances. The team has the fourth-best penalty kill rate at 77.0%, allowing 26 goals in 113 times shorthanded.
SCOUTING SAINT MICHAEL'S
  • The Purple Knights have collected 25 points in conference play, good for third in the standings.
  • Jeremy Routh collected the NE10 Player of the Week honors on Monday after going for eight points in the sweep of the Penmen. Routh is fourth in the conference with 22 points. He has 10 goals and 12 assists which are tied for fifth and tied for eighth in the NE10.
  • Zach Taylor leads the Purple Knights and is second in the conference with 13 goals scored this season. Taylor has eight assists which brings him to 21 points, good for a tie for fifth.
  • Brennan McFarland is tied for the team lead with 12 assists while David Ciancio follows closely with 11.
  • Marshall Murphy was named the NE10 Goaltender of the Week following the pair of wins against Southern New Hampshire. On the season, Murphy has a 2.91 goals-against average and a 0.922 save percentage in 15 starts. Murphy holds the top spot in the conference in save percentage while ranking second in goals against average.
  • The Purple Knights power play is operating at 18.2% after scoring 14 goals on 77 opportunities. The penalty kill has scored 22 goals in 77 times shorthanded, good for a 71.4% penalty kill rate.
ALL-TIME vs. FRANKLIN PIERCE, SAINT MICHAEL'S
  • This will be the 30th meeting all-time between the Hawks and Ravens and will be the second of the season between the programs. Saint Anselm is 25-4-0 against Franklin Pierce all-time.
  • Saint Anselm netted an 8-2 win over Franklin Pierce on Jan. 13 in the first meeting of the season. The squads combined for five goals in the first period before Saint Anselm scored five unanswered goals through the second and third frames to reach the final score.
  • The Hawks and Purple Knights will be battling for the 48th and 49th times in the series. Saint Anselm is 28-15-4 against Saint Michael's all-time in men's ice hockey.
  • The programs skated to a 1-1 tie on Nov. 18 before the Hawks grabbed a 3-2 win the following day, taking a 1-0-1 record through the first two games of the four-game season series.
