MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey netted a 4-1 win over Post University in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 14-9-1 on the season and 9-5-1 in NE10 contests while the Eagles drop to 6-16-0 overall and 4-10-0 in conference battles. Saint Anselm will play its third-consecutive home game on Tuesday, Jan. 31 when Franklin Pierce University comes to the Hilltop for a 6 p.m. opening puck drop.
Sophomore
Max Burum (Marshfield, Mass.) netted a pair of goals while juniors
Will Christensen (Ridgefield, Conn.) and
Tommy Schwartz (Ridgefield, Conn.) registered a goal each for the Hawks. Christensen added two assists to his goal, leading all players with three points in the tilt. Senior
Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.) matched Christensen with two helpers.
The Hawks struck first at 6:19 of the first period. Hayes found classmate
Mark Leach (Londonderry, N.H.) at the point who fired a wrist shot on Eagles goaltender
Drew Blodgett. Blodgett made the inital save but Christensen cleaned up the rebound chance to give Saint Anselm a 1-0 lead.
Michael Gethings got Post on the scoreboard as he redirected a blue line shot from
Lucas Baksay just under three minutes later on the power play to knot the score at one.
Saint Anselm took a 2-1 lead to the first intermission after a one-timer goal from Schwartz at 16:47. Hayes got the play started with an attacking zone faceoff win and slid a pass to the top of the slot for the quick strike.
Junior
Liam Lyons (Gloucester, Mass.) nearly gave the Hawks a two-goal lead with a shot from the top of the slot. His shot attempt beat Blodgett but rang off the crossbar at 16:33.
Just 1:28 later, Burum sent a wrist shot into the upper left of the goal just after a Saint Anselm power play to extend the advantage to 3-1.
In the final minute of the second frame, Lyons again nearly found the twine as he forced a turnover while shorthanded in front of the Eagles goal but Blodgett made the stop on the shot attempt.
Burum recorded his second tally of the game at 14:42 of the third period, giving the Hawks a 4-1 lead. Burum won an offensive zone faceoff and found the back of the goal on the ensuing wrap-around chance.
The Hawks put 44 shots on goal for the second consecutive game while Post recorded 23 shots on target. The Eagles were one-for-three with the man-advantage while Saint Anselm was scoreless in three chances.
Saint Anselm won 40 of 68 faceoffs in the contest and were led by freshman
John Myers (White Plains, N.Y.) who won a game-high 14 draws.
Senior goaltender
Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) made 21 saves in the winning effort for Saint Anselm while Blodgett stopped 40 shots on goal.
