PREVIEW: No. 22 men's basketball to play No. 9/14 Bentley, Adelphi

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team, receiving votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches' poll, returns to action this week with two games on the road against Northeast-10 Conference opponents.

Saint Anselm, ranked No. 22 in NCAA Division II by D2SIDA and its National Media Poll, has won four games in a row and 12 of its last 13 games, improving to 14-4 on the season and to 10-2 versus the NE10. The Hawks play at Bentley this Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m. before tangling with Adelphi on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 3:30 p.m.

Bentley, ranked No. 14 in the most recent NABC Coaches' Poll, owns a 15-2 overall record alongside a 10-2 record in NE10 play. One of the two losses on the season for the Falcons came against the Hawks, a 78-73 setback on Saturday, Nov. 19 that was played on the Hilltop.

Adelphi, who plays New Haven on Tuesday, entered the week with a 9-11 overall record and a 3-9 mark versus NE10 opponents. The Panthers have not won consecutive games since mid-December and lost to Saint Anselm earlier this season on Saturday, Dec. 3, an 84-73 Hawks victory.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Across the team's last 13 games, Saint Anselm has posted a 12-1 overall record and has averaged 77.9 points per game. As a team, the Hawks are shooting 48.4% from the floor (367-for-759) and 43.6% from beyond the arc (130-for-298).
  • Saint Anselm has played disciplined basketball this season and is averaging just 13.2 fouls per game, ranking sixth in NCAA Division II and third in the NE10 behind nation-leading New Haven (10.6) and second place Bentley (11.5).
  • Saint Anselm is shooting 40.6% from three-point land, leading the NE10, while also ranking atop the conference with 9.8 three-point baskets made per game. The Hawks also own the conference's second-best winning percentage (77.8%) and ranks second with 76.3 points per game.
  • Senior Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.) reached 1,000 career points in Saturday's 73-68 victory over visiting Southern Connecticut State University. In just 68 career games at Saint Anselm, Arbuckle became the 56th student-athlete in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone.
  • Arbuckle scored 20 points in the first half against the Owls, needing just one more point in the second half to accomplish that feat and did so on a made free throw with 12:52 to go in the contest. Arbuckle finished with 27 points to his credit while Miles Tention (Palo Alto, Calif.), who also reached 1,000 career points this season, matched Owen McGlashan (Marlton, N.J.) with 16 points.
  • Tention is ranked fourth in NCAA Division II with 38:06 minutes played per game this season. Arbuckle is 14th nationally with 36:29 played, on average, and ranks second in the NE10 with exactly 18 points per game. Tention's 15.2 points per game is sixth among NE10 student-athletes.
  • Head Coach Keith Dickson enters play this week with a 695-357 (.661) overall record across 36 seasons played on the Hilltop. Among active NCAA Division II coaches, Dickson ranks fifth in overall victories and is 25th among bench bosses across Divisions I, II and III.

SCOUTING BENTLEY

  • Saint Anselm handed Bentley its first loss of the season earlier in the season, but its most recent loss was by one point at home against New Haven, 60-59. The Chargers were able to overcome a 27-point deficit and score at the buzzer, stealing a one-point victory in Waltham.
  • The nationally-ranked Falcons rank second nationally in fouls per game (11.5), third in rebound margin (+11.7), fourth in defensive rebounds per game (31.06), eighth in free throw percentage (79.2%) and ninth in overall field goal percentage (50.7%).
  • Bentley also finds itself atop the NE10 in several key metrics, including scoring offense (80.2 ppg), scoring margin (+14.6), three-point percentage defense (31.2%), and rebounds per game (40.35).
  • Zach Laput leads the NE10 in points per game (20.6) and ranks third in the NE10 in free throw percentage (84.5). Matt Leritz has chipped in with 14.8 points per game (11th in the NE10) and leads the league with a 61.0% field goal percentage.
  • Brian Wright-Kinsey has posted 1.35 blocked shots per game, checking in third in the NE10, while Aaron Latham is averaging 3.5 assists per contest. Mason Webb is pouring home exactly two three-point field goals per game, ranking in the top-15 in the NE10.

SCOUTING ADELPHI

  • The Panthers have won two of their last three games, including a two-point win at American International on Saturday, Jan. 14 and a one-point victory at Saint Michael's on Saturday, Jan. 21. The wins sandwiched a 75-66 defeat at home against Assumption on Wednesday, Jan. 18.
  • The Panthers rank second in the NE10 in field goal percentage (46.7%) and third in free throw percentage (73.8%). Adelphi is also fourth in the conference in free throws made per game (12.1).
  • Adelphi has two of the league's top-10 performers in points per game, led by Elijah Lewis' 15.0 ppg and Ronnie Silva's 14.8 ppg. Lewis is shooting 55.6% from the floor, ranking third in the NE10, while Silva has attempted 138 three-point baskets on the season.
  • The Panthers have won or lost by double-digits just seven times – the rest of the games have been decided by nine or fewer points. The team has lost three games by one possession and won four by just two baskets.

ALL-TIME vs. BENTLEY, ADELPHI

  • Saint Anselm and Bentley will be battling for the 104th time in the all-time series. Bentley holds a slight 52-51 edge in the series in men's basketball.
  • The Falcons took both regular season meetings in the 2021-22 season and captured an 81-65 win on Mar. 3, 2022 in the NE10 Semifinals. In total, Bentley has won four of the last six games against Saint Anselm.
  • Saint Anselm has won 21 of the 36 all-time meetings with Adelphi in a series that dates back to Mar. 1, 1958 and an NCAA tournament meeting.
  • The Hawks have won nine of the last 10 games with Adelphi with the one blemish a 98-89 loss at Adelphi on Jan. 12, 2019.
