PREVIEW: Men's ice hockey set for three-game week

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team is set for three games in the first week of the 2023 calendar year.

The Hawks hit the road and battle Bowdoin College on Tuesday, Jan. 3 before returning to Northeast-10 Conference play at Southern New Hampshire on Friday, Jan. 6. The Hawks return home on Saturday, Jan. 7 to host Worcester State in non-conference play.

The Hawks skated to a 1-1-0 weekend at the Oswego State Hockey Classic. The team fell to No. 9 Oswego State to open the tournament before downing Williams College by a 4-3 score in overtime in the consolation game on Dec. 31. The Hawks are now 9-4-1 overall and enter the second half of the conference slate with a 5-3-1 record against NE10 foes. Saint Anselm hosts Franklin Pierce in conference play on Friday, Jan. 13 following the three-game week.

The Polar Bears returned to play on New Year's Day and grabbed a 5-1 win over the University of Southern Maine. The squad is now 6-1-1 on the season and will return to New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play on Friday, Jan. 6 against Amherst.

The Penmen last played on Dec. 3 against Saint Anselm. Southern New Hampshire suffered a 3-0 loss to the Hawks which dropped them to 5-8-0 on its campaign and 4-5-0 in NE10 contests. Following the battle with the Hawks on Friday night, the Penmen are scheduled to host Assumption University for a pair of conference tilts on Friday, Jan. 13 and Saturday, Jan. 14.

The Lancers skated to a 5-2 win over Westfield State to close their first half of the season at 4-7-0 with a 4-2-0 record in MASCAC play. The team returns to play on Thursday, Jan. 5 against the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth before making the trip to the Hilltop on Saturday.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Senior co-captain Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.) leads the Hawks offense with 13 points, coming from six goals and seven assists. Hayes is tied for second on the team is goals and is second in assists, trailing only senior co-alternate captain Jack Murphy (Marshfield, Mass.) who has 11.
  • Senior co-captain Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) has netted six goals and added six assists for 12 points, which is second on the team.
  • Sophomore Mark Blaney (Braintree, Mass.) is tied with Murphy for third on the squad with 11 points. Blaney netted the Hawks overtime game-winner against the Ephs on Saturday and added one assist in that contest.
  • Sophomore Hunter Brackett (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) went for three points on a goal and two assists in the Oswego State Hockey Classic. Brackett now sits on three goals and three assists for six points this season.
  • Senior goaltender Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) collected his 28th collegiate win on Saturday and is now tied with current assistant coach John Herrick '97 for fifth all-time. In 2022-23, Howard has made 369 saves, good for a 0.909 save percentage and has a 2.82 goals-against average. The senior leads the NE10 in saves and goals-against average while ranking third in save percentage.
  • Saint Anselm is nine-for-54 on the power play this season, good for a 16.7% conversion rate. The penalty kill sits at 86.6% after killing off 58-of-67 times shorthanded.
SCOUTING BOWDOIN
  • Bowdoin is receiving votes in the most recent USCHO.com NCAA Division III National Poll following their 6-1-1 start to the season.
  • Gabe Shipper and Andy Stoneman are tied for the Bowdoin lead with 10 points apiece. Shipper is the team leader with eight goals while Stoneman is tied for the team lead with six assists.
  • Jack Studley ranks second on the Polar Bears roster with five goals scored. Stoneman and Andy Washco are tied for third with four tallies each.
  • Luke Wheeler joins Stoneman for the top spot on the roster with six assists. Four student-athletes have five helpers on the season.
  • Alex Kozic has started seven games in the Polar Bears goal. Kozic is 5-1-1 with a 2.13 goals-against average and a 0.919 save percentage, totaling 171 saves on the year.
  • The Polar Bears power play is operating at 14.3%, netting four goal on 28 chances while the penalty kill sits at 88.5%, allowing just three goals in 26 times shorthanded.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE
  • George Thurston and Derek Flynn rank one and two on the Penmen roster in points with 11 and 10 each respectively. Thurston leads the squad with seven goals while Flynn is the team leader with nine assists.
  • Matt Amante and Ryan Pomposelli are tied for second on team with four goals each while Ryan Coady and Connor Ball have netted three each.
  • Brendan Lynch is second on the team with eight helpers. Coady is third on the Penmen at five assists with Thurston and Jack Gray following closely at four each.
  • Adam Mercer has started 11 games in the goal for Southern New Hampshire. Mercer has 340 saves, second most in the NE10, and has a 3.42 goals-against average and a 0.904 save percentage.
  • Southern New Hampshire has netted 15 goals on the power play in 78 chances, good for a 19.2% success rate. The penalty kill sits at 79.7% having allowed 15 goals in 74 times shorthanded.
SCOUTING WORCESTER STATE
  • Brendan Ronan is the lone student-athlete on the roster with double-digit points. Ronan has scored five goals and is tied for the team lead with six assists, good for 11 points.
  • Mikey Wilson is tied with Ronan for the Lancers lead with five goals scored this season. Wilson is second on the team with nine points.
  • Brian Clougherty is third on the roster with eight points and joins Ronan for the top spot on the roster with six assists.
  • Jakub Kubik has drawn a team-high seven starts in the goal for Worcester State. Kubik is 3-3-0 on the season with a 3.83 goals-against average and a 0.893 save percentage.
  • The Lancers power play sits at 14.0% with seven goals in 50 opportunities. The penalty kill has given up five goals in 32 times shorthanded, which leads to an 84.4 penalty kill percentage.
ALL-TIME vs. BOWDOIN, SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE, WORCESTER STATE
  • The Hawks and Polar Bears are meeting for the 59th time in the all-time series. Bowdoin is 41-14-3 against Saint Anselm.
  • The programs are meeting for the first time since Jan. 3, 2020. That contest went Bowdoin's way by a 5-4 score and extended their current winning streak against the Hawks to five.
  • Saint Anselm and Southern New Hampshire are meeting for the fourth and final time in the 2022-23 regular season. The Hawks are 2-1-0 on the season and are 40-12-1 in the all-time series, making this the 54th meeting between the programs.
  • The Hawks grabbed a season-opening 5-1 win on Oct. 28 before the squads traded 3-0 wins on Dec. 2 and Dec. 3.
  • The Hawks and Lancers will be meeting for the 10th time in the all-time series on Saturday. The programs last met on Nov. 6, 2021 with the Hawks grabbing a 4-0 win which pushes them to a 6-3-0 record in the series.
