MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Camila Heredia Osante (Oaxaca, Mexico) earned doubles and singles victories for Saint Anselm College in the women's tennis team's 6-1 loss to Stonehill College.
Saint Anselm falls to 0-1 on the season while Stonehill, competing in its first year as an NCAA Division I institution, has defeated two former Northeast-10 Conference teams to improve to 2-0. The Hawks host Roger Williams on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m.
Heredia Osante, in her collegiate debut, earned Saint Anselm's only triumph in singles action, when she rallied from a set down to post a 2-6, 6-2, 10-5 success in the No. 5 position. She also partnered with sophomore Abigail Svor (Lewiston, Maine) to earn a 6-4 result at No. 3 doubles.
In the afternoon's final match, freshman Irene Garbo (Assemini, Sardinia, Italy) went the distance at No. 1 singles. Facing Cristina Solorzano Valencia, who ranked No. 4 in the final Oracle/ITA Division II East Region singles rankings in 2021-22, Garbo took the first set in a thrilling tiebreaker, 7-6 (5).
After Solorzano picked up a 6-3 victory in the second set, the two played a 10-point tiebreaker which went in favor of the visiting Skyhawks.
Freshman Matilda Briegel (Tutzing, Bavaria, Germany) joined Garbo and Heredia Osante in making their collegiate debuts on Thursday.
