MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team posted a narrow 4-3 loss to Roger Williams University on Sunday at the South Athletic Field courts.
Saint Anselm drops to 0-2 on the young season while Roger Williams improves to 3-0. The Hawks open Northeast-10 Conference play at home on Tuesday against Franklin Pierce, the reigning conference champions and an NCAA Division II regionals performer, at 4 p.m.
Freshman Camila Heredia Osante (Oaxaca, Mexico) was a two-time winner, propelling the Hawks to an 8-5 victory alongside sophomore Abigail Svor (Lewiston, Maine) at No. 3 doubles before securing a 6-0, 6-3 decision at No. 5 singles. Heredia Osante is now 2-0 in both doubles and singles play to begin her collegiate career.
Saint Anselm began the match with the doubles point as the tandem of freshman Matilda Briegel (Tutzing, Bavaria, Germany) and senior Anastasia Kapothanasis (Westbrook, Maine) came away with the 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles, joining the duo of Heredia Osante and Svor as victors.
Freshman Irene Garbo (Assemini, Sardinia, Italy) put away her counterpart at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-4, and Heredia Osante's singles win rounded out the scoring for the Hawks, who led the match at one point by a 3-1 margin.
Roger Williams won the next two singles matches, tying the overall score at 3-3. Saint Anselm held a 6-3 lead after the first set at No. 3 singles before Roger Williams rallied back to capture a thrilling three-set win to secure the overall match, 4-3.
