MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season on Thursday by blanking in-state opponent Plymouth State University, 7-0.
Saint Anselm moves to 1-2 on the season while Plymouth State evens its overall record at 1-1 following the non-league tilt. The Hawks open Northeast-10 Conference play this Sunday at New Haven.
The Hawks picked up the doubles point as the top tandem of freshman Irene Garbo (Assemini, Sardinia, Italy) and sophomore Olivia Parzick (Bow, N.H.) notched a 6-2 victory. At No. 2 doubles, senior Anastasia Kapothanasis (Westbrook, Maine) partnered with freshman Matilda Briegel (Tutzing, Bavaria, Germany) for the same score – Plymouth State defaulted at No. 3 doubles.
Garbo and Kapothanasis eased their way to 6-0, 6-0 victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, before freshman Camila Heredia Osante (Oaxaca, Mexico) locked down a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Briegel logged her first collegiate singles win at No. 4, elevating the Hawks to a 6-0 team score.
Parzick clinched the shutout with a three-set thriller that ended in a 10-point tiebreaker, 10-7. She opened with a 6-2 victory in the first set before her No. 3 singles counterpart won the second set, 7-6 (7-2).
Heredia Osante, the reigning NE10 Rookie of the Week, remains without a defeat in her collegiate career. She owns a record of 3-0 at No. 5 singles and remains 2-0 in doubles play on the season.
