WEST HAVEN, CT. - The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team began conference play on Sunday with a Northeast-10 matchup at the University of New Haven, and the host Chargers prevailed by a score of 7-0.
Â
The Hawks doubles tandem of
Irene Garbo (Assemini, Sardinia, Italy) and
Olivia Parzick (Bow, N.H.) posted an impressive 6-3 triumph at the No. 1 position, but New Haven would take both the No. 2 and No. 3 contests to secure the doubles point. Saint Anselm's third doubles unit,
Abigail Svor (Lewiston, Maine) and
Camila Heredia Osante (Oaxaca, Mexico), brought a 3-0 record into Sunday's match, and jumped to an early 3-0 lead over New Haven. The Chargers would battle back, however, taking six of the final seven games to win at No. 3 doubles, 6-4.
Â
Despite several tightly contested matches, New Haven swept the singles portion of play to earn the shutout win over Saint Anselm. Freshman
Matilda Briegel (Tutzing, Bavaria, Germany) put forth the Hawks effort in the No. 5 singles post, in what was the afternoon's final contest.
Briegel lost a tight first set, 6-4, before falling 6-2 in the second.
Â
The Hawks (1-3, 0-1) will return to action on Tuesday, September 20, when the young squad hosts NE10 foe Franklin Pierce at 4:00 p.m.
