WORCESTER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team was on the short end of a 5-2 decision at NCAA Division I Holy Cross on Saturday at the Sinnott Family Tennis Facility.
Saint Anselm drops to 1-4 on the season while Holy Cross moves to 2-0 with the result. The Hawks have a quick turnaround, facing Assumption at home on Monday, Sept. 26.
The Hawks got off to a quick start in doubles action, with the visiting Hawks sweeping all three matches to earn the doubles point. The No. 3 tandem of sophomore Abigail Svor (Lewiston, Maine) and freshman Camila Heredia Osante (Oaxaca, Mexico) scored a 6-4 triumph to put the Hawks on the scoreboard.
At No. 2 doubles, senior Anastasia Kapothanasis (Westbrook, Maine) and freshman Matilda Briegel (Tutzing, Bavaria, Germany) led early by a 4-1 score, but the Crusaders would rally to tie the match at 4-4. After a service break, the Hawks would hold on for a 6-4 win.
Sophomore Olivia Parzick (Bow, N.H.) and freshman Irene Garbo (Assemini, Sardinia, Italy) went the distance at No. 1 doubles, winning in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (3), for the duo's third consecutive victory at the top spot.
Holy Cross outmatched Saint Anselm in afternoon singles, with the home team managing wins in five of the six contests. Garbo garnered the team's only success by way of her 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles.
The closest the Hawks would come in other singles matchups was at the No. 6 hole, where Svor was downed 6-4, 6-4 in the day's final contest.
