MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team picked up its first Northeast-10 Conference victory of the season on Monday, with a 5-2 home win over Assumption University.
With the win, the Hawks move to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in NE10 play while the Greyhounds fall to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in conference contests. Saint Anselm snaps a 12-match losing streak to Assumption with its 5-2 win. The Hawks head to Bentley University on Wednesday, Sept. 28 for a battle with the Falcons, starting at 3 p.m.
After the Hawks started the afternoon by earning the doubles point, the home team would post wins in four of the six singles matches contested.
Sophomore Abigail Svor (Lewiston, Maine) and freshman Camila Heredia Osante (Oaxaca, Mexico) blanked the Greyhounds, 6-0, in No. 3 doubles action, improving the tandem's doubles record to 4-1 on the season.
At the No. 1 slot, sophomore Olivia Parzick (Bow, N.H.) and freshman Irene Garbo (Assemini, Sardinia, Italy) posted their fourth straight win as a doubles team. With their 6-3 success, the Hawks would take an early 1-0 lead in the dual match.
Heredia Osante gave Saint Anselm a 2-0 advantage, with a sparkling 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles, and Garbo's 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles increased the home team's lead to 3-0.
Assumption fought back, winning both the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches in straight sets, setting the stage for Abigail Svor's win (6-3, 7-5) at No. 6 singles that secured the overall match for Saint Anselm.
In the day's final contest, freshman Matilda Briegel (Tutzing, Bavaria, Germany) went the distance, managing a hard-fought 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 triumph at No. 4 singles.
